But competition for those “private jet jobs” flying rich people around is high enough to ensure those aren’t going to low time pilots. Small charter and freight jobs will be going to the lower time commercial pilots (but still usually 500+ hours for insurance reasons). Ironically the flight instructor job is where the shortage may be having the greatest impact in terms of quality. That’s truly unfortunate as is sets up a harder path for new pilots. Most 91 business jet jobs want you to come with ATP and type. (Corporate Jet Job listing and Will fly for Food websites.) They might pay for a Second Officer type only if you get in the door at better jobs, but many do not. They want people with experience in the jet. Most 91K and 135 jobs will pay for the type but still want people with an ATP and turbojet time. There are jobs for second seat in King Airs and light jets, but since many of those are single pilot airplanes, the second pilot can only long the time they physically touch the controls. At many jobs that guy is an overqualified checklist reader / radio operator. Sometimes called a Copilot Zero (CP0) they are not allowed to touch the controls IAW company SOPs. Getting your Commercial / Instrument and moving to a Bizjet is very difficult even in this pilot "shortage." It is not a shortage of low time pilots that is the problem, it is the shortage of highly qualified ATPs. I use to volunteer orientation flights for Young Eagles. I don't do that anymore as I got tired of poping kids dreams of becoming a pilot. Telling their parents it will cost close to $100,000 and they still won't be qualified to fly for an airline or most corporate jobs (and earn meger pay the first few years.) Many of these kids already blew their chance of becoming a military pilot as they have been on ADHD medicine for a decade. It is amazing what will DQ someone on an initial military flight physical.
October 13, 20196 yr Certainly the intake of flying students has diminished and will be a concern for the airlines. Most airlines are adopting the usual head in the sand mentality to the warnings. I'd certainly be cautious now about spending/borrowing NZ$160K to get a qualification. A qualification that has no cross credit for anything else other than flying. I foresee that It wont be long before ICAO increase the retirement age....if in fact they declare an arbitrary age at all. There is no denying that there is climate change. It's been changing since the Earth was formed. The problem is the rate of climate change. It has increased markedly with human population. That maybe a coincidence but most likely not.
