OOM error

Featured Replies

Does anyone even consider the OP's environment? That 4690K takes DDR3, never mind what motherboard he is using, so I really wouldn't start pouring money in to this system.

What I would do is source 16GB's of really cheap, but not low quality, RAM (used is a good option) and a decent SSD that you can eventually carry over. And then start saving for a more modern system.

16GB will be enough. If you can run P3D with 8 when no other programs are running, then doubling that amount will definitely get you where you want to be.

My two cents here...first see if you can free up some room on the HDD, perhaps by moving some stuff off to an external drive.  Then defrag your HDD.

It's generally not a good idea to fill an HDD up past the 80% mark, because the system needs room to do housekeeping, and fragmentation of what little space is left can be an issue.  An OOM is triggered whenever a *contiguous* block of virtual address space is requested but cannot be allocated.  So if the system asks for 1GB of VAS, and there isn't a 1GB contiguous block in either RAM or the page file, you'll trigger an OOM, even if the total space available in the totality of the smaller chunks exceeds what's needed.

I agree that investing much more in a 3-generations old PC isn't the best plan, especially w/r/t RAM, since more DDR3 RAM can't be re-used in a new system build.  I think you might be able to get away with your 8GB of RAM and some more mass storage.  An SSD would be usable on a new system...DDR3 RAM, not.  And P3Dv4 can be configured to use add-ons spread across different drives.

That's exactly what I did. Found some RAM so now I am at 16 and bought a decent SSD. No OOM's so far and I am running navigraph and ASP4 with P3D.

P3D now boots up notably faster - less than a minute!

Thanks to everyone for their input. Much appreciated.
