OOM error

Featured Replies

Firstly my specs:

CPU is  i5 4690K @ 4.00 GHz

RAM is 8Gb

GTX 1060 6Gb VRAM

I have just upgraded to Windows 10 pro and have also just moved across to P3D v4.5 from FSX-SE.

The only add-on I have is a plane - the aerosoft CRJ pro. Using default scenery with mostly "MEDIUM" settings and onboard weather (NO active sky).

I've already done a few short flights with the CRJ with no problems. Yesterday, I downloaded Navigraph charts (subscription). After a few minutes I got the OOM message. I figured it had something to do with Navigraph charts so I uninstalled them. I then gave FS Tramp a try. Same problem. I then uninstalled FS tramp and did a short flight using ONLY P3D - no problem.

I must also mention that my HDD is almost full - only 30Gb free.

What is the problem?  Do I need to buy a big SSD or is it entirely a RAM problem?  Please advise. Thanks

It's a combination of both:

BECAUSE you have too little RAM, Windows will use the system hard drive as an extension of the real ram. But since that's almost full, the swap file cannot grow any further ( if you set it to automatic, which is the default ) or it has exceeded the limit you set ( if you set it to manual ), hence the OOM.

You will want to sort your low space issue ( perhaps getting rid of all unnecessary files ), but I suggest to upgrade your RAM first, since 8GB is far too few for P3D4.5, and real RAM is still way faster than the fastest SSD you could buy. Get at least 32GB, with P3D 4 it's worthy.

Total overkill. 16GB is fully sufficient.

OOM was a result of to little HDD on my end here

Is that meant to read too little HDD space?

Do you know something we don't? And even if so, there is certainly not going to be a need to double the ram once more. 20-24GB should be sufficient in that case.

Except that the question was regarding P3D and many of us could care less about MS2020...........

Why do simmers continue to spread this rubbish? I run P3D4.5 with major addons installed (Orbx, Aerosoft airports, etc.) and only have 8 Gigs of RAM and never had an OOM. If you tone down your settings, i.e., move the sliders to the left, you can run P3D with 8 gigs.

And, I agree, double your RAM to 16 gig.

To be fair, most users prefer not to move the sliders to the left if they can possibly help it.

Because I read what he wrote, and he said he COULD run "just" P3D without OOM AND he also said his SSD was almost full.

It's the two issues COMBINED that can cause an OOM.

I don't doubt you can run P3D with just 8GB with no OOMs, if you have enough disk space. With a 64 bit app, even with high settings, the worse it can happen, if your settings are too high, performances will go down fast, because even the fastest SSD is way slower than real RAM, but it will never OOM. That's what VAS means, it's the sum of physical + swap file memory, and it's handled by the OS automatically by paging. The sim will never know you only have 8GB, it will still work, but paging will make it run worse.

The OP said the problem happened when he used OTHER processes together with P3D, and the whole point of getting extra RAM is precisely when you have *other* processes running together with the sim, because with just 8GB, you are already using a sizable part of it even by simply loading Windows and all its services, even without starting the sim.

And, of course, it depends a lot on settings. things like "Use High Resolution textures" , "Level of Detail", or Autogen sliders can be very hard on RAM, and P3D4.5 will try to use as much as RAM as possible.

And that's why I said it would be best to go straight to 32GB, which is NOT "overkill": it might be a good choice in his situation, giving enough headroom to be sure the swap file will never be used and, he might even get away by setting the swap file size to the lowest possible value, reclaiming extra precious SSD space, so he might decide to postpone the SSD update, and not lose much time reinstalling stuff, something he would have to do in case he decided to upgrade the SSD instead.

All MSFS2020 demo systems Microsoft used at the X09 exhibition, had 64GB installed, this is common knowledge. Sure, an Alpha version is usually less optimized than the release version ( but it also has less features ), but I'd say 32GB should be considered a normal and safe config.

I see very sound advice from a well known developer here, based as he said, on reading the question and giving an informed answer to the question that was asked, which will allow Trevor to make an informed decision on how he wishes to proceed.

I also see wearying familiar knee jerk reactions couched in less than polite terms about questions that were not asked that are not related to the original question and therefore add nothing to the answer that Trevor is seeking.

Yes upgrade your HDD were w10 is installed.

I had OOM with 100gb left
