terrain mesh, will it improve

Featured Replies

My worry is not so much the availability of good mesh data but whether we’ll see it in MSFS. For X-Plane, for instance, there’s very good mesh for the mountainous areas in North America, Europe, Japan and New Zealand and still reasonably good mesh for South America and the Himalaya – all for free (alpilotX).

My biggest fear is that the mesh in the sim is somehow tied to that of Bing Maps. But my technical knowledge in this matter is admittedly very limited, so maybe my fears are completely ungrounded. I’d really love to see some screenshots of the Swiss Alps (Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau; Matterhorn), Lhotse or Mt. Everest to get some clarification in this matter. In Bing Maps these mountains are quite unrecognizable.

There is not « Bing  maps ». There are sat images and DEM bought and combined by MS in a product which looks like a map. I mean nothing forbids to use the images with another DEM.

It would be an incredible mistake for Asobo to release FS20 with a worse mesh than the existing mesh addons. I am not worry about the Jungfrau and the likes, I am more worried about lesser known peaks and ridges.

Well, there is a thread on the forum about Alpha vs Coronavirus lockdown, I mentioned there that I don't think the Alpha will/should be opened to everyones during this special time but all these technical discussions we are having about the vegetation, footprints and here about the mesh vs airport slopes could be the subject of technical blog posts from Asobo to entertain and inform the fans.

The other simulator developers have dev blogs to explain technical challenges and achievements as well as how things are done.

This can be a nice move during these times.

Unless all these technical matters are top confidential matters for MS/Asobo as they could have links to 3rd party providers and partners... Just guessing

Sorry for having expressed myself clumsily. What I meant is that I hope that they don’t use the same DEM as they use for Bing Maps. The reason for this „fear“ is that the similarities in this regard between the sim and Bing Maps are striking, at least in the materials they‘ve shown us so far, so it seems possible. But that‘s just speculation of course.

A speculation which is not unfounded.

I hope the terrain mesh will improve,  as some places it doesn't look good.
