Request: Gulfstream V

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately no one can develop any Gulfstream bizjets, as Gulfstream apparently will not allow any of their aircraft to be copied - apparently something to do with ‘intellectual property’ rights to their designs.

that is true, also, only one company has the rights to train pilots in their simulators.

The main sticking point is the use of the trademarked name “Gulfstream”. They are fiercely protective of that.

During one of the P3D V4 point releases, all Beechcraft and Cessna default aircraft were removed from P3D because Lockheed Martin received a letter from Textron Aviation (parent company of both Cessna and Beech) requesting that their trademarked models be taken out. They probably would have allowed them to remain for a licensing fee - A2A and Carenado have Beech and Cessna “officially licensed” models, but LM probably would not have seen the value in paying for old default aircraft that had seen little change since FSX.

In the case of Gulfstream, I suppose a developer could produce a “G-V-like” model called the “Belchfire 1000” without being legally liable for trademark infringement, but I doubt any developer would want to risk ending up in court litigating that.

Manufacturers like Boeing, Airbus, Textron and Dassault are perfectly willing to license their products for use in simulation for an appropriate fee, but Gulfstream absolutely will not consider doing so.

Interestingly though, there are several Gulfstream models for X-Plane that have been available for download for years at the Org - and as far as I know, none of those developers have ever run into trouble. Most are freeware, and not terribly accurate either visually or systems-wise, but they do bear the name “Gulfstream”, and include the classic oval windows (which GAC also holds a trademark to).

I’ve seen several AI packages that include obvious Gulfstream models, but I think that falls under the “fair use” doctrine, and those are not complete, flyable models.

FSI is Gulfstream’s exclusive training provider for new models, that’s true. I.e. if someone purchases a brand new G500/600, part of the package is free initial training  for “x” number of pilots and maintenance personnel, and that is provided only by FSI, since  GAC and FSI have a long-standing partnership. One of their primary training facilities is right next to the main entrance of the Gulfstream factory in Savannah.

But CAE (FSI’s main competitor) absolutely does train Gulfstream pilots in full-motion simulators. I have a good friend and former co-worker who is a G450/550 instructor at CAE in Morristown, where they have level-D sims for the G450/550, GV and G200

Good to know. I always wondered why as popular as they are there were none to be found in Carenado's or others offerings.
