Trying a RTW with PA-31, First Leg

Featured Replies

I didn't want to take over his post so I'll start here. I did the first leg with VOR/VFR no GPS and it was interesting.

I frequently fly with the GPS off just for a bit of added interest and navigating using the VOR (or even NDB) provides a nice additional challenge and keeps you a little busier.

If you want even more of a challenge while flying VFR and you use live weather try navigating just by dead reckoning using your speed, heading, predicted wind and ground features (if over land). If you have an iPad, there is a nice app called Flight Computer Sim which basically replicates the hand held E6B slide rule used by pilots for dead reckoning.

Two days ago I did a 5 hour VFR no GPS in TE Washington and I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Indeed Bill!

Another option, if you happen to have photoscenery with decent mesh is just follow the landmarks, topography, railways, roads and rivers etc. If fuel & weather states are not an issue - you know you'll get to your destination in daylight (or even in nighttime VFR) whilst the weather reamins VFR - then no need to bother with dead reckoning either.

I have Orbx Global and Vector and real weather but I have to em.. use some common sense 🙂

I like the PA-31 cause it has a decent range and I can do 160 at 9000 it has a nice NAV1/2 combo with double DME and it tells me the winds, I put the map on TAS for traffic and use the Avidyne for TAWS only and disconnect LNM. I use TAWS it doesn't tell me where I am but if I were to wait for clear skies it would just take a long time.

I was originally going to PAJN but couldn't resist stopping at Sandspit.

Looks like fun!

I do not recognize the flight planning software? I am normally a Plan-G user but Tim has yet to update it to handle P3DV5.

Little Nav Map a must, nearly all the information in one place. I'm nearly finished my second leg to Kodiak and no GPS, have to say that I like it.

Leg 07 First time since leaving KOLM that I have no clouds about 250nm from UHPP Yelizovo with no VOR contact or GPS. Let's see if I make it.

Dead reckoning, pilotage -- fun flying.  Watch out for the Russian air defenses.
