Take Off in the 737

Featured Replies

How is it done?  Do I press N1?  Do I press TO/GA?  Do I move the throttle up 40% and then engage N1?  Do I press the speed button?  At what point do I put the throttle to idle and let the speed control take over.

I have read so many take off accounts that I am totally confused.

Thank you

M Cumming

With V2 set on the MCP and A/T armed set throttle to 40%. After stabilized press TO/GA button.

And you don't put the throttle to idle. After being stable and trimmed, you switch on VNAV (or HDG) and LNAV (or LVL CHG or V/S) and then AP.

Thank you.  My throttle is Trottle Tek and not auto.  Perhaps there lies the problem.....

Typically you arm the A/T at the gate along with LNAV and VNAV. When you're lined up and cleared, slowly advance the throttle to 40% N1, wait a few seconds to check for possible asymmetrical thrust and let the engines stabilize, then press TO/GA on the thrust levers. The A/T takes over now and goes into N1 mode and when it has reached the calculated N1 for the takeoff it switches to THRUST HOLD. After rotation you climb at V2 + 20 kts until acceleration height. This is why you need to put V2 in the speed window during pre-flight. The real airplane takes that V2 speed from the speed window and adds 20 kts for initial climb out speed (in PMDG's 737 it's done via the FMC contrary to how the real thing does it, I don't know how the Zibo does it). VNAV and LNAV will automatically become active and you can switch on the A/P at the earliest at 400 ft. The A/T is of course already active since the start of the take off roll.

Alternatively, you can elect not to arm VNAV and LNAV and only press TO/GA on takeoff and you have to manually bug up the speed to clean maneuver speed at acceleration height and then to 230 kts after flaps have been retracted and then to 250 kts once the slats are retracted. Then you move on via VNAV/LNAV or HDG and other altitude modes like LVL CH. This is done at some operators especially when you're being vectored by ATC, but it's of course more workload. The use of A/T however is the same.

Thank you all for your comprehensive replies.  I sold my auto throttle last year in a moment of madness.  I must now replace it.

Thank you

activate all flaps by smashing f multiple times, make sure brakes are on, take throttle to full, wait 5 seconds, and release brakes. at 140 knots, pull on the stick gently to take of also, yoke, sidestick is mouse, f1=throttle down, f2=throttle up.

And go to you tube and watch tutorials plenty there if you look
