Installing the sim on a portable USB SSD

The rear I/O in the Z170-AR has:

  • 2x USB 2.0/1/1 ports
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports
  • 1x USB 3.1 Type A port
  • 1x USB 3.1 Type C port

I've simplified the naming in this case, but your USB 3.1 ports are USB 3.1 Gen 2/USB 3.2 Gen 2 (confusing naming, I know) with a data rate of 10 Gbit/s. Connect your SSD to either the teal Type A or the Type C port and you can enjoy its full speeds. According to reviews, they are very competitive with an internal SATA SSD.

Awesome! Thank you so much!

To further assist you, the USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports are those highlighted in blue in this picture.

The Samsung T5 comes with both a Type A and Type C cable, and you can use whichever you have connected right now, just make sure it's in the right port.

So overall, if the reviews are correct (which should be), it is doubtful will notice a difference between your portable SSD and an internal SATA one. However, your Z170-AR does feature an M.2 slot supporting up to PCIe 3.0 x4, which means that should you need a good improvement, you can invest into an NVME SSD in the future.

Update: Did a speed test on my HDD and my external SSD, and my external SSD substantially outperformed the HDD in all operations by about 4x. Read and write were approx 460 MB/s for the SSD and approx 118 MB/s for the internal HDD.

I didn’t even realize my motherboard had USB type C, so I’ll definitely capitalize on that port! I do have a type C cable with my Samsung T5.

Really appreciate all of the help. Excited for the sim!

This means that it's very likely your SSD is already connected in its optimal port, and the speed matches the reviews I was looking at earlier. I think you will be good to go.

It was actually plugged into the case’s USB A port (not directly into the motherboard) hahahah I just plugged in the USB C and it’s now getting 550 Mb/s 🙂 Definitely a better option than the HDD and might be as good as or better than the SATA. Woo!

Quite surprising to hear that USB-C is running faster in your case, I guess I was under the impression that it would provide a tangible difference over USB-A only with the USB 3.2 Gen 2 x 2 interface. 550MB/s is pretty much the limit of the SATA3 interface. Enjoy!

Hi everyone,

I have an internal 1 TB HDD with around 200 GB remaining and a portable 1 TB USB SSD which is essentially empty. I’d preferably like to install the sim on the SSD so that I don’t have to entirely delete X-Plane’s scenery to install the new sim. Is that a bad thing to do? Are there any downsides to installing on a portable SSD? Is it better to try and delete ortho scenery from XP on the HDD to free up space?

what type of usb port is it.........if it's usb 3.1 gen 2 it will be great for any sim or game

What is a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port?
It is capable of data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, and while it can use the USB-C connector type, it can also use a variety of other connector types. To achieve USB 3.1 transfer speeds, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support USB 3.1. USB 3.1 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps).

See ChaoticBeauty’s post above - it’s a USB 3.1 Gen 2 C port and I was able to get 550 MB/s read/write with that port and my Samsung T5 🙂

I’ve got the Samsung T5 as well, which I run with USB-C.

In short, modern SSD external drives work very nicely with the right mobo/port, the idea that you can’t run programs from them is an outdated concept I think.

Yes, an nvme drive will get a better benchmark, but I don’t think you’ll notice much difference when using the sim.
