Unused Hardware Resources?

Featured Replies

Does MSFS not effectively using my HW resources? I've just made my first flight with the B787 from EDDF to EGLL. Frame rates were mediocre to say the best. During flight I had around 25-27 fps and on RW 27R landing approach it went down to 18-20.

Graphic settings were high and partially ultra (SSAA 4x). CPU @ 4.6 (16 cores HT), GPU 2080Ti for a 3440x1440 monitor. CPU core usage was more or less evenly distributed but not more than 40%. GPU not much better with a usage of 40-50%. Temperatures were all fine. So my simple question, why does MSFS not use more of my HW resources when I have so much headroom?

Apply this trick if you fly with liners: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/small-js-config-file-mod-to-gain-10-15-fps-in-airliners-and-glass-cockpit-planes/221308

To answer your questions, there is one main thread of the 8, 16, 32... that a CPU may have, which act as a bottleneck. You may not see it if you open task manager because Windows scheduler boosts the threads randomly very quickly in order to redistribute the load, but it's there. If you open MSFS developer's FPS counter, in fact, you will not read "CPU limited" but "Limited by MainThread".

This is how the 3950X is used by MSFS for example, a 16c/32t CPU. There is nothing to do for now, apart from lowering LODs and traffic. The trick reported in the link above should give you +10-15 fps in the cockpit.

Mine is limited entirely by the cpu atm. Mine says limited by threads until I turn up to settings, then it says limit by GPU but my GPU is not even breaking a sweat

Then I cannot see how we will ever be able to use this sim with current hardware and with in depth simulated aircraft like PMDG or FSL and full AI Traffic (AIG or UT).

Hopefully with the implementation of DX12 the situation will improve considerably.

4K ULTRA HD will use your PC hardware.

MSFS installed on the D drive.
