Motherboard an Memory

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am in the process of selecting a new Server to be used with P3DV5 and MFS2020.

I need some help deciding on which one will be the best Motherboard. I will be using either the i9-10900 or the I9-10850 today due to the unavailability of the 10900 the difference in close to $400 between them.  I will also will be getting the RTX3090 new video card.

I know I need a Z490 moherboard  to be able to overclock the 10,000 series CPU's

I have been thinking on the Gygabyte Aorus, there is also a lot of ASUS motherboards, There are so many choices that is easy to get lost on which one will be the most appropriate. Can anybody shed some light on what to look for?

I also seen that DDR4 memory mostly comes in 3000 and 3600, but I have also seen DDR4 memory all the way up to 5000, though the prices go up steeply. Would it be worth to go up to a 4000 or a 4500 ? Would it be a big difference in the performance of P3D or MSF2020?

I appreciate your comments,

Thanks and regards.

Juan

You need a CPU with a "K" suffix to overclock.  An i9-10900K can be overclocked on a Z490 mobo.  An i9-10900 cannot.

Memory speed can make some difference.  Memory performance is a function of *both* frequency and latency...you want to do some research on that before making a purchase decision.

Thanks for your reply Bob. Both the 10900 and the 10850 CPU's that I am looking are the K versions. I will try to find out information about the memory'

Hello, the ram i just put in my new build is CL16 3600Mhz and I’m quite happy with the overall performance I’m getting...FYI.

Hello Dave, Thank you very much for your reply, I have also been looking at the G Skill Trident DDR4 4000 16 gb and pobably get two of those.

I have read your new system horror story on another post here, and that, gave me one of the answers I was looking for, I was between the Gigbyte Aorus and the Asus Maximus XII.

The same w\ith the PSU and case.

I have been trying to get the I9-10900K but nobody has it for less than $800 while the i9-10850K can be purchased for less than $500 I am debating if its worth it to pay the difference for only about 100Mhz.

i will post here my setup for comments before I pull the trigger.

Thanks again, and I am sorry that you have to go through all of that.

Thanks Juan, I contemplated recommending the Asus board over the gigabyte board based on the challenges I had but ultimately I decided not to since I never definitively concluded the motherboard was at fault.

Having said that the Asus board works flawlessly and I think does slightly better in benchmarking so I am certainly happy with my ultimate choice.

I got lucky with the i9 10900k CPU,  my local store  got a handful in the day I was looking for one but they certainly still seem to be hard to find.

Hi Dave,

I have had pretty good results with the Asus boards, the one I am replacing is the Maximus Hero VI. so I will most likely buy the XII. and I am still looking for the I9-10900K.
