Need help regarding flickering around edges

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

What is the best setting to remove flickering around edges of instrument panels and on some areas of the exterior aircraft ? I recorded a small video but I can't find a way to upload it.

Another question, how do I upload an image or a video into the topic ? The only option I see is to "insert image from URL".

I appreciate your help and advice.

It sounds like aliasing. Set the highest anti-aliasing setting available in options (TAA?), and run the sim in at least 1080p. That's what I did. Same GPU as you.

1. Turn on TAA

2. Raise "Render Scaling" above 100 for as much as your GPU can take.

3. Optionally, turn off sharpening as described in the thread below.

TAA is turned on and display resolution is 2560X1440 and Render Scaling is100.

I will try your other recommendations.

Thank you and could you guide me how to upload an image or a video.

Image or video need to be uploaded (you can use Dropbox), however to embed videos, you need an embed code, like YouTube provides. Images can be inserted using the button, but as I stated before, they need to be uploaded already, AVSIM doesn't provide webspace.

I noticed render scaling helps a lot starting at 120 but it does hit the gpu hard.

Kind regards,

Tim

True, it's most effective when running at 1080p because modern GPU's have a little overhead there. Running 150-170 on 1080p with a 1080ti. Unfortunately, MSFS doesn't allow non-native solutions, otherwise I'd suggest running in 900p (1600x900) with higher render scaling for a smoother image, worked wonders in X-Plane.

If this gets rid of the flickering / feather edged shadows, I will give it a try.  I tend to get these along with the sharp edged shadows. (I think we might need an add-on from SteveFX here! 😄).

I also turned up my shadows to 4096 as Colonel X mentioned by modifying the config file.  I might test to 8192 and see how it goes, but I think the flickery shadows are a different issue.

On my 1080Ti at1440, I have TAA set and render scaling between 120 and 140 depending on where I intend to fly.

For example, over a big city =120, open countryside smaller towns and airports =140.

This works well and without checking frames per second all of the time, it appears smooth.  I am locked at 30 FPS anyway if it can sustain that, and it tends to do it alright. 👍

I am still not sure Anisotropic and super sampling are working properly in the settings.  As long as I have Aniso at x 16, the super sampling doesn't seem to do much.

The shimmering wire fences are still there whatever I do, so I think this may be an issue with them and how they are told to display rather than the in sim settings.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

If you have antisotrophic filtering at 16x you may turn off texture supersampling, there is no effect visible.

Shimmering fences however will stay with us as long as flight simulation.

Ok I uploaded the video to YouTube https://youtu.be/hZoQeeQdqWw

I hope this works and thank you for your advice.

That definitely looks like an issue. Maybe uninstall your GPU driver using DDU and then reinstall fresh NVIDIA drivers (in case you are on the green team).

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply because I was kind of busy.

I uninstalled the GPU driver using DDU and reinstalled the NIVIDIA driver like you suggested and now no problems at all .

Thanks for your help.

Is it OK with you if I mention your name and your solution on the YouTube video and in the MSFS forums because some people are having the same problem and messing with the settings to fix it.

Sure, glad it worked out for you.
