What should be done with a hosed MSFS installation?

Featured Replies

This last update hosed my MSFS. There are no buildings in any city nor airport where the new photogrametry is. That is an area almost the complete Northern California. No buildings at all, none.

My question is: Is there any way to redo the last update? To make Steam install the last update again over top of the latest update that Steam just finished doing?

I deleted all the rolling cache that did not help.

I do have data streaming turned on in the DATA portion of MSFS Options. And am connected just fine to the internet.

I have tried to 'validate MSFS' on Steam but after 15 minutes the bar is still at 0, apparently it cannot even start to verify it.

It is my bedtime now but if anyone has anything to suggest or a clue, I will read it tomorrow morning.

Thanks.

After the update, did you run the USA update (around 4GB) - it is a totally separate update and is easy to miss. One way to check if it is installed is on the main Sim menu screen, select the East Coast Tour (not sure the exact title). If you have not installed it, it will first tell you to run that.

I did not run the USA update. Maybe that was the problem. The MarketPlace tab was grayed out, I could not get in there.

Thanks for your message, that helps a lot. Next time I will do that first thing. I did not know I had to do that.

By the way after 'verifying' on Steam, I booted up MSFS again and it is now reinstalling the whole update again. Good! That might fix everything.

Meanwhile the update is 11 gigabytes. All the updates are huge for me. This is true for a great many persons on the MSFS official forum too, every update for us is huge, way larger than for most people. I think its because we have mods that are not in the community forum, we changed some files inside the game.

My internet is slow and this will take about 5 hours to do the 11 gig update.

If it works tomorrow AM when I get up, then I won't have to redownload the whole game again.

Fingers crossed!

well thats always  dangerous thing to do, and mods in the comm folder can create issues too.

I heard a Steam verify caused the whole of MSFS to be reinstalled?

Probably best to move the community folder outside of MSFS before the update, like I usually forget to do!
The move it back in piece by piece.

It seems from several reports that verifying the sim in Steam will result in a complete re-download. Avoid doing that unless you are ok with starting with a 100GB re-install.

Try to avoid mods that require modification of sim files. This will cause problems for sure. The sim seems programmed to reinstall if it finds any files don’t match what it expects to see.

Seems the update corrected itself on the second time I installed the update, and the correct scenery is back :).

I did not know how to make it reinstall again so I started the Steam verify and then stopped it right it away before it got past 0%.

This caused MSFS to redownload the whole update package again (in my case 11 GB).

After doing that MSFS the normal scenery is back.:), no more empty streets.

Meanwhile I'm downloading the USA package from the marketplace, will take couple hours or more (I have to slow my internet settings for the Microsoft servers to stabilize, a common problem for anyone whose internet ISP limits speeds to about 20 Mbs. On a medium speed cable plan, you usually have to retard the speed even more to get a good connection with MSFS servers. But if you have really high speed provider, then it will stabilize without slowing it down. It seems counter intuitive, but the higher your connection speed limit is, the less you will have to slow down the speed even more for stability.

Have to go to work, but maybe things will work out, at least the scenery is not hosed anymore. After the 1st update try the marketplace was greyed out, this time it is back functioning and as I say the scenery isn't hosed any longer.

Don't have to work today after all.

I did figure out why the first run of this new update failed. I looked at a screenshot I took during the update and the gamertag was not me!!!

Somehow when I had logged onto Xbox to do the update, my email and password recognized me as somebody else. This meant that I my application (MSFS) was not in sync with what Steam stores in the Cloud. Because Steam had sync'd my update with someone else's gamertag, not with mine while doing the update!

Seems incredible, but I see a different gamertag and player avatar in the upper right hand corner of the screenshot taken when the first update trial happened. I never used anything like that name, nor like that avatar. Hmmm wonder who it was...

Oh well, that won't happen in a million year again, the second time I did the update it was with my gamertag and icon showing and the update worked.
