Making a plane more responsive to Autopilot..

Featured Replies

Apart from elevator trim effectiveness (which I have increased slightly and it seems to help a little), how useful are other autopilot parameters such as max_pitch and _bank_acceleration and _velocity, and max_throttle_rate? How much can I screw them up? LOL

I'm trying to see if DC Design's Concorde can be made more responsive to stop it hunting around, overshooting and porpoising when trying to get established on an ILS.. I can horse it around to get the job done, but that's not exactly the point and it upsets the passengers LOL. It would be nice to have the jet establish itself nicely on the localiser after the stock ATC has given me the usual 30 degree intercept angle...

Does Radar Contact 4 set you up further out I wonder?

Not having any experience with modifying such parameters, I would encourage you to test it on R.C. or any other quality ATC add-ons.  The default ATC gives so many last-minute and extreme approach instructions that aren't suited for passenger comfort, especially if you use a passenger add-on like I do (PACX).  I for one enjoy using PF3 - I rarely get bad approaches from it.

Sim: Prepar3D 5.2 (main) and Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), CH Eclipse Yoke, Thrustmaster Airbus TCA Side Stick, CH Pro Throttle, CH Pro Pedals, Saitek Cessna trim wheel, TrackIR 5, SPAD.neXt running 3 Saitek Logitech panels, ButtKicker Gamer 2, Razer Naga Chroma gaming mouse

System: Intel i5-10600K CPU @ 4.10 GHz, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, 64GB DDR4 RAM @ 4200 MHz, ASRock Z490M Pro4, 2TB Intel NVMe SSD 660p, 3 monitors

I've noticed that quite a few add-on aircraft will 'porpoise' quite a bit on intercepting the glideslope sometimes oscillating above and below it for a few miles even though you have followed all the rules and intercepted from below at a reasonable approach speed. However most seem to intercept the localiser cleanly enough providing the approach angle is good and I would have thought 30 degrees was not excessive but, from what you describe, it seems that the DCD Concorde has issues with both localiser and glideslope interception.

I have never played about with any of the parameters in the autopilot section of the cfg but I guess, providing you kept a backup of the original, there would be nothing to lose in trying - apart from perhaps time as you would probably have to alter them one at a time to evaluate the effect! Here is a link to the Microsoft FSX SDK which explains what each parameter does and which you might find useful if you decide to go down that pathway!

Hi Bill,

Yes I do have that link, in fact it's where I got the parameter names from, but the usage and examples are far from clear to me. I was wondering if anyone had prior experience along the lines of "If you alter that parameter by 2 or 3 then she'll act like a fighter jet and lock on straight away" or some such.

I fear it would take me a long time to figure out so no harm in asking. Thank you
