Troubleshooting FSX issues

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I am trying to figure out an issue with my FSX setup. I removed McAfee Total Protection from my system, because it was using up a lot of RAM, making it impossible to run my simulator, but performance problems persist. The simulator keeps freezing in spurts as I am running FSX. In addition, the frame rates are constantly fluctuating between 41-50 fps and 3-4 fps. Utl_client, Host Process for Windows Services, FSX, Couatl and ASNext apear to be using most of the RAM, but I am still puzzled. This is a problem that has only began in recent times, as I have used FSX, Ultimate Traffic, GSX  and Active Sky Next for FSX simultaneously in the past, with no serious issues.

I also use Smart Game Booster, Advanced SystemCare Tray and Windows Defender.

Apart from Windows Defender I’m not quite sure what these do but it might be worth testing to see how things go with them all turned off as perhaps they may be aggravating rather than helping the situation. Windows Defender, as I understand, is a sort of antivirus so perhaps that could be scanning your FSX files in the background and causing issues. I use McAfee but I turn off real time scanning (although I leave the firewall active) when I am using FSX because it scans the FSX files in use and can slow things down significantly.

I use FSX with Active Sky 2016 + ASCA/Envtex, Ultimate Traffic (with low AI settings), GSX and a load of airport and Orbx addons and generally FSX runs pretty smoothly without too many problems, although things can slow down a bit when approaching resource intensive airports. I generally find that keeping things as simple as possible is best with FSX and I don’t have any performance boosters or use any tweaks (apart from highmemfix).

If you haven’t done so already, I would recommend reading the Avsim FSX configuration guide, going through it step by step and setting up FSX exactly in accordance with the advice given there. I did this many years ago and the result was a significant improvement in what previously for me had been a very erratic and frustrating FSX.

How much RAM does your computer have? Which Windows version do you have - could Windows be undertaking some background task to affect the sim?

Does the frame rate drop happen whilst flying over an unpopulated area or is it restricted to places like Heathrow or O'Hare etc. Does it happen in default planes?

Could part of your RAM be failing?

Can you think of anything which you might have changed recently on your setup?

Hope some of these questions help you, or some of the answers help more knowledgeable members (not me! ) arrive at a solution. 🍻
