December 29, 20205 yr I am a long-time simmer, but recent VR convert. Love the immersion, and for GA/VFR flying it's all good. But I also like flight planning and procedures and the like, and I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts about the best way to do that, right now, in a VR environment. I'm thinking probably that it makes sense to do everything up front in 2d, then move to VR on the runway. Until we have an Avitab-alike for MSFS, I am not sure we can do much else - since as far as I know external windows won't show in VR. Any thoughts or tips about how to integrate procedural simming with VR, much appreciated. Paul Skol
January 10, 20215 yr I've been wondering this myself. The one time I got VR to work I used the map on the garmin but the waypoint lines didn't line up near the course change so it make flying it a bit weird. Interested in seeing what others are doing for navigation when in VR.
January 11, 20215 yr I'm doing as you mentioned above, get everything setup, and ready to go, then the vr headset goes on. Unfortunately, after getting everything setup in 2d, the only issue I have is the somewhat horrible mouse implementation. It's near impossible to use that awful mouse in some aircraft. Floating way above the panel makes it a chore at times, ruins an otherwise fantastic experience. Don't know if all headsets are affected but it's definitely a issue with the Rift S. Hope it's fixed, soon. January 11, 20215 yr It would be nice if the added something like a tablet when in VR that can show a second screen or something so you can interact with a 3rd party program like littlenavmap.
January 12, 20215 yr Author @Muskoka the mouse issue rings entirely true with me - especially in the A320. Programming the FMC is a major pita. It feels like I'm dragging the mouse through treacle, and then to "latch" it onto a specific button is laborious. My fps in the 320 aren't great either. Suspect my VR use is likely to be more GA based. Paul Skol
January 12, 20215 yr New to VR for a couple of day. It definitively need an utility to check approach plates or flight planning documents in the VR environment. For the mouse, I either close the right eye and I can precisely see where the arrow should be but that is awkward. I use mainly the focus button that bring you to a few inches of the button you want to depress. I have also mapped customs view on 5 buttons of my honeycomb yoke with one button used to shift so i can have 10 custom view in the cockpit. It was working well in 2d but I have to change most of the custom view in VR so it feel more natural. Not sure that using a controller will be better as I gave both hand on the yoke and throttle cadran very often and I dont see how i would hold a controller at the same time. PierreP3D when its freezing in Quebec....well, that's most of the time...C-GDXL based at CYQB for real flying when its warming up...
