February 13, 20215 yr Back to ducks this week. A common duck at the refuge during the winter is the Northern Pintail. All birds have a code that biologists and bird watchers and wildlife photographers use much like airport codes. Usually the first four letters of the duck's name like the Mallard would be MALL. For those with two word names like the Northern Pintail they use the first two letters of the first name and the first two letters of the second name. Northern Pintail would be NOPI. When out counting birds when I was a volunteer, we commonly used these codes as we identified birds. Two people usually go out on a bird count; the spotter and the recorder. The spotter identifies and counts the birds and the recorder logs them down on a sheet. So the spotter would call out, "Fourteen NOPI" and the recorder would write down 14 after the NOPI code on the sheet. Here are the Northern Pintails. 1 - NOPI on the water. 2 - NOPI in rough water 3 - Bottoms Up... NOPI feeding on vegetation on the bottom of the pond. 4 - A pair of NOPI taking off 5 - A male NOPI in flight 6 - A female NOPI in flight. Female ducks are rather drab and a bit more difficult to identify. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
