Not exactly. It all comes from Meteoblue. But it is not based on METARS. It is based on models.

If you watched the Dev Q&As, the intended operation of the MSFS Live Weather model is that it uses METAR data near airports and the global predictive weather model (which gets run 1 time or 2 times a day and produces forecasts for the entire globe) for everywhere else.  They specifically mentioned fixing a backend error with the METAR data in one of the Q&As.

However like many other things in the sim it's not clear if it works the way they say it does, or is implemented in a way that even makes sense, and the explanations given are very vague.  For example it would not surprise me if they used the METAR data only for the winds once your wheels touch the ground or something silly like that.

I also think they still have an issue with 'above ground level' vs 'above sea level', in areas of low terrain the weather matches up a lot better then in areas of high terrain.

Even your in cockpit real world weather displays do not always match what is really out there.

I don't think it injects current wx data, unless you use one of the mods people have mentioned.  The wx is a "predictive model" -- the developers words.  If you want to say it is injecting something, it's injecting wx based on that predictive model.

Surface wind speed and direction, temperature and pressure will be the same as the most current METAR for most airports with Live Weather. Clouds, precipitation and visibility will come from the predictive model and may (or may not) correspond to the METAR.

I'm not necessarily critiquing the live weather in the sim (although it deserves critiquing).

All I want to know is what to expect when I flip live weather on. Whatever the sim is doing, it is doing something. Shouldn't there be a way to tell what the sim is going to do? If we can't use RW weather reporting, how are we supposed to know what to expect if there isn't a tool that shows us what to expect?

This seems so silly.
