April 8, 20215 yr I'm using an x-box controller right now which works except that the rudders don't really work in practice. Is there a next step that I use without mounting and has at least as many buttons as the xbox controller?

There's the Thrustmaster T.16000M which would give you probably the best stick and throttle entry level combination set. The stick is probably the best entry level for it's price it uses hall effect sensors and not pots. Sticks that use pots sooner or later always end up introducing jitter. The throttle uses pots and will likely go that way over time but that's mostly unavoidable. Depending on your budget there's other options as well.
