Streaming flightsim.to content to the sim?

Featured Replies

I've been thinking about all the great freeware content on flightsim.to. Could it be an idea to let Microsoft host all of this on their servers and stream the content to the sim?

Imagine all those airports one could land on! This would of course be an optional thing via a toogle in the sim.

Not sure that is viable, number 1 there are a lot of sometimes sim breaking conflicts as it is.  Number 2 is the quality varies massively and number 3 you would need some way to toggle things on or off and with the sheer volume this wouldn’t be viable.  So for now you download what you want, have fun when things break but it’s your responsibility and if you want to disable something you can do it yourself real easy.

Handmade scenery and airports from Asobo are not even streamed today. You download all of it locally through the Content Manager. I guess they dont want to deal with the extra server load /bandwidth requirements.

If they eventually decide to move their own products to the cloud we can start talking about this, but I do not think they want to go in this direction now. Most high quality Airports are several GB in size.

Asobo are implementing a scenery gateway (like x-plane) so people can improve airports and submit them. I suspect though it will be a slow inclusion process with all those Google models being used!

I love flightsim.to they provide an AMAZING experience and there are tons of great freeware devs on there too but lets not forget theres also a lot of trash on there too.
