August 29, 20214 yr Hi everyone, have a general flight sim question that did not seem to fit any of the other forums very well. Moderators please move if there is a better forum that I did not see. Anyways, I recently got a new flight sim PC and it has a smaller SSD with the OS and P3D v4.5 installed to it. I also have lots of Orbx scenery and addon aircraft. Due to limited space, I will have to install one of those 2 things on my secondary internal drive, an HDD, I believe it is 5400RPM. My question is this: in your experiences and knowledge, which would you think would be better to put on the secondary HDD for best performance? Aircraft or scenery? Of course there is the option of me simply trying to see which works better, but I thought maybe I would see if anyone here has any input first. Thanks, Caleb Caleb Byers PC: HP Envy 750, Intel Core i7 6700 @ 3.4 GHz (max 4.0 GHz), 24GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 with 4GB Memory, 2TB SSHD Windows 10 Home 64 bit. Simulators: Prepar3D v3.4, Prepar3D v4.5, FSX:SE, FSX:Gold Edition Using the FSX Deluxe Edition SDK SP2 for development.
August 30, 20214 yr Hard to say...the impact of moving to a very slow 5400 RPM HDD is going to be long startup times, as P3D will go thru all installed acft and all active scenery when it loads. Once it's loaded, P3D does very effective lookahead caching--scenery is loaded into memory well in advance of it being needed, so access/transfer time from the HDD becomes fairly irrelevant while in flight, except in areas where you're using photoreal scenery areas, where a slow drive can cause stuttering.
