Getting the AI pilot to actually work

FSXPilot is an autopilot for Flight Sims.  Its been around forever.  I will say it has some issues with MSFS with certain planes.  The landings are a bit rough.  However in FSX it worked really well.

Ah sorry, I was looking at the wrong program:  "FSPilot" instead of "FSXPilot" !

Thanks, I'll check out FSX Pilot.

I just tried to let the AI fly the Airbus 320 and it crashed into a mountain after missing the approach, So clearly the AI flying for MSFS 2020 is really pointless.

At least with FSXpilot we have some control over things, but even that has to be tweaked.  I am going to reach out to the developer and see what he says regarding the issues I have discovered.  But I would still try it especially on the default aircraft and see how it works for you.

I downloaded and tried it last night. With surprisingly good results.  The only areas where I had any hassles was (a) flight plans and (b) the final landing.  Creating a FP in MSFS's flight window wasn't enough.  I had to create a MSFS FP, save it, and then load it into FSXPilot, save it again in FSXP's native format, then I was ready to go.

My flight plan was a 30nm flight between EGNT and EGNV.  I used the default C172 (analog).  When I hit "Run flight plan", it powered up, stayed dead straight down the runway and rotated at 60kts (pretty accurate for a C172). It initially flew runway heading for about 8nm (I thought it wasn't going to work at this point), then it suddenly turned and headed towards the flight plan route. It climbed to the selected altitude at 700FPM (again, appropriate).  The approach was rather odd - it stayed at the cruise altitude of 3500 all the way to the destination, then flew a long downwind leg of 12nm.  It then turned and flew a long approach, descending appropriately.  By 200' above the runway, I would say all had went really well and I was impressed with it.  However the landing was really poor; it announced "flare" at 100' (far too high for a C172), cut the power to idle and then smacked onto the runway at 400 FPM.   It was a real shame that the landing was so rough because every other part of the flight was really good and I've never (in any sim) had a plane flown by AI from take off to landing.   Good fun!   They just need to change the reference they use for fare and idle and I think it would be perfect. (I noticed it 'reads' the aircraft.cfg file).

Straight after the flight, I tried MSFS's own "AI Pilot". The C172 took off straight down the centre line but did not appear to rotate - instead it just flew to 80kts, when the set trim took care of the rotation.  Definitely not as good as FSXPilot.   It then climbed at a painful 200 FPM and 110kts!  Finally, when it reached the destination, it descended, flew towards the runway from the side and crashed.

I'm not the OP of this thread but I'm pleased I followed it and that you mentioned FSXPilot.   It's clearly old, in terms of UI and appearance, but it works surprising well (apart from the landings).

Planes will require tweaking in MSFS2020.  I emailed the developer and he isnt really updating it anymore, so what you get is what you see.  Unfortunately for MSFS2020 that means not every plane will function properly with FSXpilot.   In FSX it works very well.  But I always used to land the plane myself usually.   It works quite well with GA aircraft which is probably why you had success.   But ya the landings in MSFS2020 arent very good.   they are much better in FSX.  Tweaking how the aircraft works may help.    Im kind of bummed because MSFS2020 is listed as being supported by FSX Pilot and technically it really isnt.   Its a try and see type of deal.  Nothing was really tested like it used to be.  It was just put there for everyone else to mess with I guess.   It worked great with the C208 I flew around my area here in Orlando and found my house and some other areas with the scenery  which is clearly old because the aprtment building I used to live in 3 years ago wasnt even built yet, just part of it.  And its been there for like 7+ years.   But it was still a cool flight.  Then I set up the GPS autoland to Sanford airport and it bounced off the runway with a hard landing.   I dont believe the ILS landings work at all in MSFS for FSX pilot.. that would solve some of the landing issues.   So its a word not allowed shoot either way.   Landing with ILS should and an Airbus should technically autoland for you, its just messing around with that FMS for an hour before you fly is the pain in the butt.
