November 11, 20214 yr What databases does the GNS 530 use and where are they? In may just be a coincidence, but I recently updated to the latest GTN750 and new Garmin Trainer, which all works fine. However, I now find I can't load a plane (both P3Dv4 and P3Dv5 hang) that uses the GNS 530, thus my question about the GNS 530 databases. I tried reinstalling the latest version of the GNS 530 but the problem persists. Thanks for any ideas. Al Edited November 11, 20214 yr by ark
November 12, 20214 yr Hi, The GNS V2 ships with the GNS Trainer and its own DB files. It installs it all in its own folder, typically: C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\GNS Trainer\GNS\db In addition, the latest(s) GNS installers also ship with a more recent DB which gets installed in the Reality XP program data folder: C:\ProgramData\Reality XP\Common\GnsTrainer\dbfiles If you're not opting out during installation (this will change to opting in in the next updates), it will automatically set the environment variable to redirect the DB file, as documented in the RXP GNS User's Manual p21. However the GTN shouldn't have any incidence on the GNS. Instead, can you make sure you've excluded the RXP files from your anti-virus for example: https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/522608-trojan-virus-false-positive/?tab=comments#comment-4476792

It looks like all the db files are where they should be. I tried running the GNS installer both opting in and out for the more updated db file, but the sim still hangs before actually loading the a/c. I assume if my problem was a simple case of not finding the db files, the a/c would still load but when running the GNS530 I would get a db not found message. At least this is what I've seen happen in the past with the GTN750. I've not had this problem in the past, and I'm running the latest GNS530 installer based on the check it does during installation. As an experiment I went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Reality XP\GNS Simulation\FltSim\64 and renamed the rxpGNS2.dll file to disable it, and the a/c did load. Of course, the GNS530 was inop. But that tells me the add-on.xml is working at least, and the rxpGNS2.dll is being run. So the sim hangs when the rxpGNS2.dll executes -- does this provide any clues on what I could look for next? Thx, Al

Yes, no apparent problems with security that I can see. I did a "deep" uninstall and reinstall of the GNS530 and the GNS Trainer Lite, but that didn't help. As another experiment I tried installing the GNS430 into the default Money Bravo in P3Dv4 to replace the popup GPS-500, and had the same problem in that the a/c would not load. Thx, Al Edited November 12, 20214 yr by ark
November 12, 20214 yr This is peculiar! I'd suggest is the following (see RXP GNS User's Manual p25): 1) Open the RealityXP.GNS.ini file from the aircraft folder with notepad.exe (or any text editor) 2) Find the section corresponding to the device you're using with the aircraft, like GNS_530_1 for the model 530 unit #1 3) Add the following lines: [GNS_530_1] LogTrainer = 5 4) Save the file and load the aircraft with P3D 5) Close P3D This setting will enable additional logging information in the rxpGnsSim.dll.log file which might give useful information.

And frustrating! 😉 Did the following using P3Dv4 (although I also have this problem in FSX, FSX-Steam, and P3Dv5) 1. To keep it simple, loaded the Mooney Bravo Retro 2. Used the RXP setup drop down to try and replace the old popup GPS-500 with the GNS 530. 3. The sim hung and no aircraft was loaded. 4. The panel.cfg file for Window 2 was modified (looks OK to me) and a fallback RXP panel cfg file was created as expected. 5. However, no RealityXP.GNS.ini file was created in the main aircraft folder. 6. I then copied and pasted a RealityXP.GNS.ini file from another aircraft folder into the Mooney folder and added LogTrainer = 5 under the heading [GNS_530_1] 7. After restoring the original Mooney panel.cfg file I tried again to replace the popup GPS-500 with the GNS 530, but the sim hung as before and I had to restart it. 8. There was no rxpGnsSim.dll.log file created in the Douments folder that corresponded to an appropriate time stamp. There were rxpGNS2_menu.dll.log and rxpGNS2.gau.log files created which respectively showed: 21/11/12 22:04:20.062 09000 - ] # rxpGNS2_menu.dll version 2.4.21.4 21/11/12 22:04:20.064 09000 INFO ] edit panel: C:\P3Dv4\SimObjects\Airplanes\Mooney_Bravo\panel\panel.cfg and 21/11/12 22:04:21.588 02984 - ] # rxpGNS2.dll version 2.4.21.6 21/11/12 22:04:21.588 02984 INFO ] 9. Interestingly, when I tried the above with the GTN750, it all worked fine including the process automatically added the necessary RealityXP.GTN.ini file to the aircraft folder. Thanks very much for your help! Al Edited November 12, 20214 yr by ark
November 13, 20214 yr Thank you for your feedback. The rxpGnsSim.dll.log file won't be created unless a GNS device instance runs. So it looks like the gauge loads ok, but it fails to load the core simulation dll and there is no error message either. This is a typical symptom of an anti-virus preventing the core simulation dll to load/run (rxpGnsSim32.dll in this case). If the file was missing, there would be an error in the rxpGNS2.dll.log file indicating this. Can you nevertheless cross-check whether you do have both rxpGnsSim32.dll and rxpGnsSim64.dll in "C:\ProgramData\Reality XP" ?

November 13, 20214 yr This seems to be in order. Can you please try the following: 1) rename rxpGnsSim64.dll to rxpGnsSim64.dll.disabled and rxpGnsSim32.dll to rxpGnsSim32.dll.disabled 2) load an aircraft with the GNS V2 3) check whether the gauge loads You should see the GNS bezel at least and a black screen, otherwise there might be additional information in the rxpGNS2.dll.log file. This will at least help determining whether the gauge fails, or the core simulation component fails.

Disabled the dll files and tried two different a/c: one to replace a panel GPS and a different a/c to just replace a popup. In both cases the sim hung and I had to restart it. Again no rxpGnsSim.dll.log file was created. Do you think it might be worth trying to re-download the installer with Windows Defender anti-virus off? I have the GNS 530 license file, but would need to know where to go to re-download the installer since I can't use the Configuration Update tool because the sim doesn't run. On the other hand, the recent download of the GTN50 update did not have a problem so it is probably unlikely a Windows Defender issue. Al Edited November 13, 20214 yr by ark
November 14, 20214 yr Author As another data point, under the Win10 Start Menu I find Garmin Aviation Trainers, but under that the only trainer accessible is for the GTN750. Would you expect there also to be a GNS 530 Trainer, or Trainer Lite option? Al Edited November 14, 20214 yr by ark

I recommend totally uninstalling your current version. The license file will be left in place. When you run the fresh installer it will channel you through the F1 eCommerce process. When there select that you are reinstalling. You will need to verify your original purchase. That will require the email address you used at the time of your actual purchase, and I believe the order number. You can look the order number up in the history for your F1 account. I re-downloaded the GNS V2 installer, ran it, and the problem has been fixed! So apparently something was corrupt with the previous installer. Also thanks again to Jean-Luc for his time in trying to find the problem. Al
