November 28, 20214 yr I've probably posted this before but I've just got to do it again... About 25 years ago when the Memphis Belle was still on display at Mud Island my wife and I went for a visit. And there she was in all her glory. And also there was a fellow there who helped with the restoration. He gave us brief history lesson on the the Belle. During the course of his talk he referred to the Belle as a B-17G. After about the third such reference a little old lady stood up and said "pardon me but the Memphis Belle was a B-17F. Not a B-17G". Taken aback, the lecturer didn't quite know what to say. He finally came up with something like "I can assure you that she is a B-17G". To which the little old lady replied..."OK, believe what you want, but I have over 4000 hours flying all kinds of B-17's, and I'm telling you that the Memphis Belle is an "F"". Turns out she was a ferry pilot for the 17's from the factory to England during WWII. Add this to getting to see the real Belle and it was a great day. Hanging on the wall just above this computer is the famous photo of the Belle as she left England for the last time. And it's signed by Capt. Morgan. November 28, 20214 yr Nice, and yes, she is an F model. Probably seen the Hollywood film, where they used a G model (Sally B) with the chin turret. Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60GHz. RAM 32 GB 1 500GB SSD and 1 2TB HDD NVIDIA RTX2080Ti 11GB WATER COOLED
November 28, 20214 yr On our way home from South Carolina once we stayed in Memphis overnight. Or at a motel across the river from Memphis. But we went back across the rover to Mud Island just to see the Memphis Belle. Have any of you ever been to the Air Force Museum in Dayton? I've been there twice and still haven't seen all of it. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
