Flying a multi-engine plane with a single throttle quadrant?

Featured Replies

I want to fly a multi-engine plane, but only have one throttle peripheral. Is there any way to toggle which throttle (1, 2, or both) my lever controls, such as by pressing different hot keys? For example, during start-up I may want my lever to control the engines individually, but while flying I want to control both simultaneously. I want to switch this back and forth as needed by using different hotkeys.

I wish to do the same with the prop and mixture controls.

If this is not possible in MSFS, will FSUIPC allow me to program this?

I've spent an hour researching it online and can't find a clear answer. Thanks!

What controller do you have? Is it really a single lever device, or do you have something like a logitech quandrant, with 3 levers?
If the latter is the case, you could assign throttle to 1 and 2, and use the third one for mixture (ga) or flaps (jet)

If you want multiple configurations, you can do that with MSFS itself. You can switch configurations from the toolbar menu in flight. FSUIPC or Axis and Ohs might have more options or be able to switch using a button though.

During startup you can also use the virtual levers in the cockpit since you are using the mouse a lot anyway in these circumstances.

I have the logitech quadrant with 3 levers. I can buy another one to have all 6 levers but gonna try to just use the one for now.

I've thought about changing profiles in MSFS to accomplish this but I'd rather not have to click thru the menus while flying - would prefer to just press hotkeys to switch.

Not a fan of controlling the levers with the mouse but I will if need be.

Maybe FSUIPC is the best option

FSUIPC is about ~30€, for twice that you could purchase a second Logitech quadrant. Personally, a second quadrant would be the most convenient option although FSUIPC has other benefits.

Should be the same as FSX -  press E + 1,2,3,4 to select which engine you are using. The controller will act on that engine.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Tried it earlier but it didnt work. I'll give it another shot

In the Control binding screen there are bindings for 'Throttle' that should operate on all engines and then bindings for 'Throttle 1', 'Throttle 2', etc that only operate on that specific engine.

I use the generic 'Throttle ' binding and have no issues flying multi engine aircraft with my HOTAS setup.

I tried this several times in MSFS and unfortunately it doesn't work. My throttle quadrant always selects both engines.

I understand FSUIPC might allow me to activate different levers by assigning hot keys? Though every time I read about FSUIPC I get confused and seems really complicated.

I understand this but is there a way to select Throttle 2 (for example) without having to change profiles, and then switch back to Throttle 1 or both at the same time?

My reasoning for this is because the PA-34 checklist calls for starting the engines separately (not simultaneously)  using the throttle and mixture levers. I enjoy using my throttle quadrant to do this instead of the keyboard or mouse, and I'm trying to make it work on a single Logitech Pro Flight Throttle Quadrant rather than buying a new one because I don't have a lot of space at my desk for another peripheral.

I have two logitek three-lever controllers mounted side by side. If I wish to fly a twin, then I set the two left levers for throttle 1,2 and the next two levers for prop pitch 1,2 and the two to the right to mixture 1,2. I change the colour knobs to this setup as well. If I am flying a 4-engine prop plane (DC-6 Lockheed Connie) I set the first four levers to throttle for engines 1-4, and the last two levers to prop and Mixture, so that each lever controls prop pitch and mixture on all four engines simultaneously. This doesn't allow  you to do a four engine startup with the levers, but you can do that by pointing your mouse to the VC controls that you require to match the checklist.

My system specs: Intel [email protected] - 5.2 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, 32GB  DDR4  RAMNoctua NH-D15 CPU Cooler,1TB Seagate SSD, 4TB Seagate HD, Windows 10, Asus 32 inch monitor, Saitek Yoke, Throttle Quadrant, Rudder Pedals and Trim Wheel     Sims: MSFS2020      Preferred Aircraft  Black Square Bonanza, and Baron, A2A Comanche, PMDG DC-6, Red Wing L1049

Thanks, this is probably what I'll end up doing (using the mouse). Not a big deal. I cant imagine you having 4 quadrants to simulate a 4 engine plane, lol! So I can work around it as well unless I decide to buy another one.
