Sardegna in aereo, Parte due

Sardegna in aereo, Parte due

In part 1 last Saturday we managed to get to the Campo di Volo Valledoria (LIWC), so we depart from here for part 2 of the Sardinia excursion. We land at Campo di Volo Pista Vasa (LIWD) (WP1 is a lead-in for the airfield) and continue to the Aviosuperficie La Smeraldina (LIAX). The famous Costa Smeralda is north of Olbia and one of the most famous places in Sardinia. Many of the rich and famous like to spend their vacation here. Therefore it is extremely expensive here. So we continue south and leave the VIPs alone…Olbia’s airport Costa Smeralda (LIEO) is our next landing.

We follow the coast south and then turn back west to see a bit more of the coastal mountains. Our first landing will be away from the coast at the Aviosuperficie Loelle (LIHB). We turn back to the coast and land at the Superficie Dorgali (LIES). Now we turn inland and fly towards Gennargentu Mountains. WP6 marks the Punta La Marmora, with about 6000ft Sardinia’s highest mountain. Our next landing is at the coast again, Tortoli (LIET). This is again an area with a lot of tourism, as the beaches near the town are especially beautiful. From Arbatax – just north of the town –  ferry connections to Genua and Civitavecchia are available. Due to a lack of passengers the airport had lost its importance and is closed. Since the end of the runway is just a few meters from the beach, some approaches were as spectacular as at Princess Juliana.

Now we enter a restricted area, the Salto Di Quirra weapons test and firing range. We visit its headquarters at Perdasdefugo and land at the small Aviosuperficie Aliquitta (LIRX). In earlier days – maybe still today – Salto di Quirra had a range off the coast for live firings over water where the telemetry was controlled from the range as well.

We do some more sightseeing and fly around west of the hills of Salto di Quirra. The next stop will be at the Campo di Voo Sardegna (LIGE). We head back to the coast and land the Aviosuperficie Privata Avielsar (LIYY).  We follow the coast to the Aviosuperficie Antica Sardegna (LIOQ) and from the to the Capo Carbonara. From here we turn towards Cagliari and finish the flight at Cagliari’s airport Elmas (LIEE). Cagliari was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1324 to 1848, when Turin became the formal capital of the kingdom (which in 1861 became the Kingdom of Italy). Today the city is a regional cultural, educational, political, and artistic center, known for its diverse Art Nouveau architecture and several monuments. It is also Sardinia's economic and industrial hub, having one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea and an international airport.

Documentation
The flight plan can be found here.

Aircraft
The flight hast 286 miles and 11 landings. I recommend a STOL-capable aircraft again, some runways are shorter than 1000 feet! I will be in the Milviz PC-6 in the D-FOGO livery. As ever, please fly what you like.

Scenery
There is a payware version of Costa Smeralda (LIEO) available from ORBX. A freeware version of Aliquirra can be found here: https://flightsim.to/file/23921/qirx-aviosuperficie-aliquirra-perdasdefogu-sardinia

Time and Weather
For takeoff on Saturday, set the simulator at 1:00 pm local for January 15, 2022.
We typically prefer real weather…
