Any Quad-Core users with SP1?

Featured Replies

Hi people...I have seen all the great improvements on performance people have with single and dual core PCs... I can only wonder what is the benefit of having a quad-core PC with FSX and SP1 installed...This should be an interesting thread. Anyone have any reports on performance on this type of setup? Thanks!!Carlitos

So far its almost workable with *all* sliders set to absolute max. (16-25 fps) flying a circular pattern over San Fransisco. I do get some terrible stalls. I would call it 'lag' if it were an online game. Its particularly noticeable in spot view. The chase camera maintains view and occationally the craft and senery stall and a moment or two later they release and the chase camera is ahead and has to back up and reestablish view.My feeling is that scenery/effects/traffic is being batched and things stall. I watch my core usage and see that core zero is almost always at 100% while the other three are 80-90%. I set the BufferPools to other than default (25, 50 or 100) and the load time virtually comes to a standstill at 83% (scenery) and 89% (traffic).the most dramatic affect on fps seems to be traffic and global.Rig: Velocity Raptor Signature Edition========================Lian-Li LXe-W (black)Intel QX6700 w/ CoolIT FreeZone CPU Cooler [email protected] nForce 680i SLI Motherboard NB:3600mhz, SB:3700mhzCorsair Dominator DDR2-1066 Twin2X2048-8500C5D (4GB)@2.21vPC Turbo-Cool 1KW-SR PSUAreca ARC-1220 8-Port Raid Controller 256mb cache4x150GB WD Raptor 10K rpm SATA150 (600GB Raid 0) | 2x 750GB Seagate Barracuda (1.5T JBOD)2x eVGA ACS3 8800GTX @650/1050 @ SLI @63c-75c | DELL 3007WFP / DELL 2407WFPCreative X-Fi ExGamer| Plextor DVD+/-RW (PX-760A)OPTI-UPS|2000VA/1400W DS2000B (double convertion online sinewave)Dual Boot - Vista Ultimate@primary|XPPro(sp2c)@secondary

Do you have an idea overall of approximately what percentage gain you see in FPS from before? Its so good to hear all of your cores are "firing."Thanks, Steve

Thanks mket. The stall you are talking about is the jerkyness that I have been saying, yeah I have that too in my dual core. The whol thing almost freezes for a few seconds and it reorients the spot view. Its very annoying. I hope its some setting thing that we can do. I am sure the beta folks would have pointed that out I am sure. Thats my main problem so far. I tried it on my old PC Dell XPS 2 (sing core). Same jeriness/freeze happening there too.Its good to know the Quad core is being used.Man, now, I am salivating with the idea of building a new rig. :( with a quad core and OC like you have done. Well..atleast there is hope and something to lookforward to.Thanks again.Mannyedited to add:BTW, setting the below parameter in my fsx.cfg helped a bit.Since you have quad, try setting it to affinityMast=3 and see what happens.[JOBSCHEDULER]AffinityMask=2

My Dual-Dual Cores are working perfectly now in SP-1... All 4 processors are always running from 45% to 65%... Load times have been cut in half I'd say... I did a fresh install of FSX with no mods so far then added SP-1...I'm really happy to have all 4 processors finally working... I have all Graphics sliders maxed, Real Weather, Autogen Dense, Air Traffic 50%, all other traffic 15% to 25%...Flying around KPDX Portland 25 to 70 fps... On the ground at KPDX 18 to 25 fps... This is easily a 50% improvement from what I was getting before SP-1... FSX is truly fluid now and I'm very impressed with what I'm seeing with all Graphics maxed... Water however is at 1x...Thank's Phil and thanks ACES for great work...bnickServer Workstation Vista Ultimate 64 Tyan Thunder S2895 Mobo 4: AMD Dual-Core 270 Opteron processors 2: Asus 7800 GTX 512mb SLI Mode Graphics 4gb SDRAM 42001: Western Digital 500gb SATA-2 drive (Vista 64) 3: Western Digital 250gb SATA-2 drives (Win XP Pro 32)24" Dell 1920X1200x32Creative Audigy 7.1 Surround Sound fsxsp1qz0.jpg

When you say :"Flying around KPDX Portland 25 to 70 fps... On the ground at KPDX 18 to 25 fps... This is easily a 50% improvement from what I was getting before SP-1."Do you mean that your frame rates are twice as good (actually 100% improvement)as before or 50% better than what you had before? Like if they are "25 to 70 fps" now were they more like "12 to 35 fps" before or approx. "17 to 45 fps" before? I'm just trying to evaluate if I want to move from DualCore to QuadCore before the next price drop.Thank you for your patience, ;^)Steve

Setting the FPS to a finite number rather than Unlimited helps in reducing the Sudden Pause/Jertkyness.MAnny

bnic,Having graphic sliders to the far right should have scenery and autogen to extreme dense, not just dense.

Sorry... You guys made good points I should have clarified more... I guess I shouldn't have said maxed because they all all except Autogen which I had left at dense not that higher settings caused problems or anything, I just hadn't had the free time yet to start testing fps hits using the 2 higher settings above dense...Also normally I would have put before and after comparisons as far the new fps rates I'm seeing after SP1 versus before...I was getting prior to SP1 on the ground all around KPDX anywhere from 12 to 17 fps depending on Real Weather complexity that was downloaded on any given day... In the air around Portland prior to SP1 I was pulling pretty much what others reported getting and that seemed to vary from 16 to 23 fps and this was for sure only accessing one of the four processors and only one of the two Asus EN7800GTX graphics boards...So yes I'd safely say I'm seeing a minimum of 50% increase in both FPS, as well as FSX Loading time, and that really surprised me, but simply looking at Task Manager now shows me that from the moment I start FSX Processors 2,3, & 4 are working anywhere from 45% on up to 75% while Processor 1 is maxed at 100% as it was prior to SP1...There are a couple buggy things popping up though that I'm watching, one being after about 5 minutes into any flight I loose my keyboards keystrokes, F-keys fail, and if I go into Display options I loose the ability to change any settings as both my mouse and keyboard are ineffective... I can shut down FSX via Task Manager but we know that's not right... I remember experiencing and reading of others who had strange events happen when their Graphics settings were too high so that's where I'm testing right now and I really shouldn't be reporting problems in this thread because you guys are more concerned with Quad Processor operation... More testing for sure... It is interesting though that it's just about 30 seconds from the time I start FSX to when I'm ready to fly... That is a big change in itself...bnick

I really should note one other interesting byproduct of SP1 that being Ram usage...If you note my Task Manager in the image above you can see that SP1 now has me using 2.45gb of my 4gb ram presently loaded...Prior to SP1 on a fairly clear day like this and from this location I would have been using 1.6 to 1.9gb max ram usage...bnick

The reason I made that comment is if the scenery and autogen are set to dense (two step down from the far right), my C2D can pull off that kind of fps in your airport and JFK as well with airline AI set to 80%. I found extra performance gain from SP1 is higher on mid-high end machine than really high end machine. Another real frame rate killer is real weather (in storms) using ActiveSky.

Good points... I have been reading some folks are having problems using the Real Weather now so I will be turning it off for a bit... You are using and 8800 and I'm using a 7800 both GTX's and as I read depending on the make there should be at least 15% and some have tested 30% increase that would be to your advantage...I'm also thinking I might drop back 2 versions on my Nvidia display drivers, I'm presently using the latest 158.18 and I've seen these cause problems at times that go away with a rollback or two...Lots of testing right...? The start up time with SP1 is still incredible though...bnick

Just a quick note!Installed the patch, no fresh install of FSX and no defrag.Running on Vista-64.Not very scientific! When I trained someone how to swim in the Navy I started by pushing them into the swimming pool. Some learned instantly, some had help from a guy pushing them up from below by grabbing their feet and giving them a little boost. So in that vein I maxed out ALL the sliders to extreme, unlimited frames. I figured I would do a fresh install and de-frag later, after a quick look see.I logged the core usage and found em all 90+% busy.Couldn't believe how fast FSX loaded, the scenery took about 2-3 seconds to load, amazing, less than 10 to main menu screen.Same FPS's in New York, 26-30 but the visuals, traffic etc., were amazing.Phil Taylor and co did a great job IMHO.
