Scenery Library question

Featured Replies

DIn 64 bit P3D is there any longer a reason to deactivate sceneries in the scenery library you are not using on a current flight? I haven’t done this since the FSX days but is there any kind of performance advantage in doing so? You can do this easily with the Lorby add on Manager tool but is there any use?

To my knowledge, the only possible advantage is the time it takes to start P3D. The more sceneries installed the longer the start time. But to make a real difference, you must have a lot of sceneries installed.

Personally, I keep all my sceneries enabled because I don't mind if P3D takes a few minutes more to start. It is a personal choice I guess.

There is a potential second advantage based on disabling certain sceneries, but it depends upon your specific sim and PC setup.

..in that if you have VFR/photo scenery installed/loaded and your route takes you over this area, there will be some demand on your system to load those sceneries. One can argue if there is a huge difference or not, but if you are flying at FL360,  you could afford not to load that scenery since much of the detail will likely be missing at that altitude. In doing so, this you may save some VAS. Flying VFR of course is a different story.

Note: overflying scenery should in theory consume VAS and then release it again once out of range, but its been observed that in some sceneries this return may not always occur. Again the impact may be significant or marginal depending upon the sceneries you have installed and depending upon how much VRAM you have on your specific graphics card.

I do a lot of IFR flying so for me there's a benefit of not loading in several hundred airport sceneries. As mentioned above, it takes a shorter time for the entire sim to load up in the first instance.

My system from start of the P3D program to being in the cockpit is usually around 60-90 seconds.  I typically dont disable Orbx Landclass or mesh though.
