Will adding a second monitor impact MSFS performance much?
NBouc replied to Alistair Logie's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcGo for it. I recently added a 4K TV to run FS2020 and 20224 and now use my ultra-wide 2K screen (3440x1440) as a second monitor to display tools just as you intend to do. I lost a few FPS going from 2K to 4K but not a lot. Having my second monitor turned ON or OFF makes no difference in resulting FPS. 14700K with RTX4080 16GB

IniBuilds KJFK 2024
@RNAV19R, I just flew the ILS 22L with the Learjet 35A at IniBuilds KJFK Enhanced for FS2024 and had no problem. LOC, GS and DME signal stable all the way down 😉 Edit: This is with FS2024 v1.3.23.0 SU1 (I don't use beta versions)

4k 32" or ultra wide 1440p 34"?
NBouc replied to santiair's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcAlso consider the fact that the physical screen height of a 34 inch ultrawide monitor is about the same that of a 27 inch 16:9 monitor. So if you were to go with a 34 inch ultrawide, you will have about the same screen height of your current 27 inch IPS, just a bit larger horizontally.

Problem setting up a Flight Plan in P3D
Paul, this is most probably because there is a "/" character in the file name to be saved or in the description field (Ex.: Montreal/Trudeau or Toronto/Pearson) . Windows considers this an invalid filename thus the pink color to alert you of that fact. Remove the "/" from both the file name and the description and you should be able to save the flight plan. I always keep my file names as short as possible, such as "CYUL to CYYZ", but that's a personal choice. Normand

Black(slow loading) textures
Bonjour Richard, As mentionned by Sergio, adding TextureMaxLoad=33 in your DISPLAY section helps in reducing the texture load time. It is not present by default so you must add it yourself in your Prepar3D.cfg I personally use the value 30 (you may try different values, but it must be a multiple of 3). To make it even snappier, still in the DISPLAY section, I also modified TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=120 (the default value is 30 i think). It gives me very good results at FT CYUL. Best regards, Normand

No AMD video card? Really?
NBouc replied to nuke74's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcFSX requires DX9. Microsoft included an option in FSX to run in "DX10 Preview Mode" that is available if your OS has DX10 or better (introduced with Windows Vista if I recall well). But MS implementation of this DX10 mode is not optimized (read beta build) and can cause problem for some users, specially with 3rd party addons. Some users like it, some don't. I personaly don't use DX10 preview mode. It is not related to the version of DirectX that comes with your OS. It is simply an option in FSX that you can select. When not selected, FSX runs with the DX9 modules of whatever DirectX version is installed (as long as it is DX9 or better). If you wait for the i5 3570K, let's hope that the new architecture will really make it better than the 2500K, since their clock speed is almost identical. Either of those CPU will give you a big increase in performance compared to your actual system. Take care, Normand

No AMD video card? Really?
NBouc replied to nuke74's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcNuke74, Having 2 identical FSX computers at home, except for the GPU, I may comment on using an AMD7870 OC 2048MB vs Nvidia GTX 570 1536MB. Both have a i5 2500K at stock speed, 8GB DDR3-1600 MHz RAM, running Windows 7 64-bit Home Edition. Both have a Corsair TX 850 V2 PSU. I find the 7870 to be a very good GPU with an image quality almost as good as the GTX 570 in most cases, but it losses more FPS than the GTX570 when a lot of clouds must be rendered. Also, I find that NVidia renders Anti-Alliassing a tad better than AMD (image quality). The only reason that one of my computers has an AMD instead of an NVidia GPU is to support 3 displays (Eyefinity setup), which I find easier than going the Matrox TH2Go route and is more economical than buying 2 NVidia GPUs. So, based on my own experience with both GPUs, I would suggest: - Buy AMD 7870 OC if you plan on using multiple displays (for setup peace of mind), or - Buy GTX580 or 680 if using only one display (for image quality and performance on high settings). BTW, I've been using both NVidia (6800, 7800GTX, 8800GTX, GTX570) and AMD (5850 and 7870 OC) video cards with FSX over the years and heavy cloud impact on AMD GPUs have been observed on the 2 models I tried. Despite this, I am very satisfied with my 7870 OC, since I rarely fly in heavy cloud situations. Best regards, Normand

Help need to add wired switch
Hi Scott, No problem mixing manufacturers in my experience, nor using more than one switch. I currently have a Linksys E3200 router connected to a D-Link 8-port Gigabit switch (10/100/1000), which in turn is connected to a downstream Linksys 4-port 10/100 switch located near my Home Theatre devices. Since all my media player devices Ethernet connection are 100-Mbit and I already had the Linksys 10/100-Mbit switch, I decided to use it since it is good enough at that end. I use a 30 ft Cat 6 cable between the 2 switches instead of a Cat 5e for its better shielding. I would recommand getting a Gigabit switch (10/100/1000) even though your setup is curently 10/100 only. It will work at 100-Mbit for now, but If in the future you decide to upgrade your router to a Gigabit one, you'll be ready to take advantage of it across your network. It will make moving files around (if using some NAS for example) a lot faster and with less impact on video streaming if done simultaneously while movng files around. To sum up, in my office, I have a E3200 Router (G-bit/WLAN) feeding 2 computers + network printer, and:- D-Link 8-port Gigabit switch (feeds up to 6 devices, plus one upstream cable to the router, plus one downstream cable to the 10/100 switch). In my Home Theatre room, I have:- Linksys 4-port 10/100 switch capable of feeding 3 devices. For now, it feeds my WD TVLive HD Plus media player and my Sony Blu-Ray player, which leaves me 1 free port for future use. Best regards, Normand

Amazing performance with latest catalyst driver
NBouc replied to clarkresponse's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcWell ... I tried both AMD CCC 11.6b and 11.7 drivers and I must say that I am very disapointed by AMD. Even though performance and image quality is good, I saw no improvement compared to 10.7 I was running before. But my disapointment lies with the fact that selecting a preset does nothing. I created preset #1, saved it, created preset #2 (Eyefinity 3x1), saved it, but I am unable to switch back the first preset. When I select the other preset, nothing happens (in both 11.6b and 11.7). I am stucked on the last one created . Trying to open CCC to check the presets gives me a spinning cursor and nothing happens. It does not crash, it simply does not display CCC. I have to reboot to be able to access CCC. Opening CCC after a fresh reboot and selecting an option sometimes gives me an empty popup window. This on a nearly fresh install of Windows 7 x64 (installed 6 days ago with a perfectly functionning CCC 10.7 for my HD5850). I tried installing on top of existing drivers, I tried uninstalling the previous drivers first, with and without Driver Sweeper, with the same bad result. I re-installed CCC 10.7 and everything returned to normal behavior. This is the 3rd computer on which I try new AMD drivers for my Asus HD5850. I am done trying AMD's greatest and newest crappy drivers. When this video card dies, I'll look at buying from the competition. I can't believe how AMD can screw up a function as simple as calling an XML definition file (preset) and applying it on so many drivers in a row. I had the same problem when trying 10.8, 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, 10.12, 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4 (skipped 11.5 and 11.6) 11.6b and 11.7, on 3 different computers, but with the same video card (which has always worked very well on the 3 computers using CCC 10.7). For those of you having success with the latest AMD drivers, I am very happy for you. I wish my experience was as good. Best regards to all, and thank you for your inputs. Normand

Amazing performance with latest catalyst driver
NBouc replied to clarkresponse's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcThank you George and all the others for your comments. I realize that not everybody is getting the same results with CCC 11.6, but based on George's results, I'm willing to give them a try. The worst that can happen is that the reported boost is only observed on crossfire cards, in which case I would revert to 10.7, but at least now I know that 11.6 AA works well with FSX on someone else's computer, so it might work well on mine too.Best regards,Normand

East way to activate/de-activate Eyefinity?
NBouc replied to Clutch Cargo's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcClutch,Simply create a profile in your Catalyst Control Center (CCC) for each arrangement you want. Once this is done, you can switch between a normal desktop (3 independant screens) to an eyefinity desktop (3 span screens).Look in the CCC Help to know how to create a group, this will allow you to setup eyefinity to run Flight Sim across your 3 monitors. Save this profile so that you can activate it when needed.I curently have 2 profiles:- 3x1 Normal (I use itfor normal work which maximises the windows on each monitor)- FSX wide (I use it for FSX which maximises the windows across the 3 monitors + full screen across 3 monitors)I can switch between them using the ATI icon located on the task bar (which is faster than opening the complete CCC).Best regards,Normand

Amazing performance with latest catalyst driver
NBouc replied to clarkresponse's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcGeorge and Ironmaiden,Can you confirm that with CCC 11.6, AA is working with FSX in both windowed and full screen mode ?I am asking because with any ATI/AMD drivers I have tried past 10.7, I could not get AA to work correctly. I have an Asus EAH5850 1GB DDR5, Windows 7 Home Premium x64.I stopped trying new drivers after 11.4, being tired of getting no result :-(I am still using 10.7 as of today.Best regards,Normand

FSX Gold
vc10man,Microsoft's advice is sound, considering that FSX Gold contains both FSX Deluxe and the FSX Acceleration DVD. FSX Acceleration has its own version of SP2 included (different from the downloadable SP2 for FSX).- You first install FSX Deluxe (2 DVDs), run and activate it.- Then, you install FSX Acceleration (1 DVD), run and activate it.If you were to skip the installation of Acceleration and only install FSX Deluxe, then yes you would need to install SP1 and SP2 for FSX. Be advised that if later (after having patched to SP1 and SP2) you finally decide to install Acceleration, you would first need to uninstall FSX SP2 since the Acceleration pack cannot be installed on top of a SP2 patched FSX.Best regards,Normand

Matrox TripleHead2Go Problem
NBouc replied to Alpinekid's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcSorry to contradict you, but Eyefinity is affected the same way as TH2G when streching a 2D panel across the 3 monitors. I use both Eyefinity and TH2G digital with 3 monitors each (streched for FSX), and I have the same problem on both when displaying a 2D panel across the 3 monitors. It is obviously an FSX problem, not Matrox nor AMD (ATI).Conversly, if I limit the FSX window to only one monitor, 2D panels work just fine on both Eyefinity and TH2G.Best regards,Normand

ATi 10.8 drivers and FSX issue
NBouc replied to Sumits81's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcI had the same AA problem after installing Catalyst 10.8, there must be something wrong with this new version.I re-installed 10.7 and I have AA in windowed mode again.

Saitek Brake problem
Hi John,Go to the sensitivities and nullzone settings for the brake pedal axes in Flight Sim and reduce the nullzone down as far as it will go and up the sensitivity. See if that helps.Have you made sure that you have reversed the brake axes?Norm.

The Mystery of frames dropping in w7
Dave,I too was having low performance issues in Windows 7 with FSX and after reading your post, I changed my power options to "High Performance" and now FSX is running like a charm. I believe it has to do with the difference in PCI Express setting of the selected power option.Merci beaucoup !I hope it will also solve digitalfil's problem.

Why better perf. with less powerful system ?
I found the solution to my problem in the tread "The Mystery of frames dropping in w7"http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=275281Solution: Windows 7 Control panel/Power Options: set it to High Performance.System 1 (Quad) power option was set to "Balanced", while system 2 (C2D) was set to "High Peformance". I was quite sceptical that it could have an impact on how FSX runs, but I had to try. I changed system 1 to "High Performance" and VOIL

Why better perf. with less powerful system ?
Thank you Gary for your reply,I was referring to the CPU usage as displayed in in the "Processes" tab in Windows Task Manager. When, during my test, I saw that FSX on system 1 (Quad core) was not smooth and had low FPS compared to system 2 (C2D), I openned Task manager thinking I could identify what process was preventing FSX from running better. I saw the FSX was showing between 15% to 50% CPU usage and the only other process showing a CPU usage was "System Ile Process", showing a 50% to 85% of CPU usage.I would not have worried about it if FSX was running smooth with FSP about the same (I would understand a slight difference between system 1 and 2, but not half the FPS). That's true. I am just surpised by the result considering that when both systems were running XP Pro SP3, I was having similar performance and no stutter or pause with both systems, system 1 (Quad core) being slightly better with texture load at the time. I would imagine that if FSX uses only 50% of CPU cycle on the Quad and that "System Idle Process" is the only one using the rest, then that's all FSX needs to do its tasks. But why do it with such a low performance compared to the C2D. I guess that is what really puzzles me.I know that my test is not a scientific one, but I took great care in setting up both system the same way (just as I once did under XP Pro SP3).If a friend of mine were to come to me saying he has "system 1" and claimed that it performs less than my "system 2", I would probably tell him "sorry body, no way you set it up the same way as mine, otherwise you would get similar performance. What mistake did you make ?". See the irony ?Anyway, thank's for your input. I am in no way claiming that a lessor system outperforms a better system. All variables being the same (clock speed, RAM, etc..) a Quad should perform at least equal to a C2D with FSX, if not slighttly better with texture load (That was my observation under XP Pro). FSX on system 2 (C2D) performs as well in Windows 7 as it did in XP Pro. I am simply trying to achieve the same on system 1 (Quad).Take care !"

Why better perf. with less powerful system ?
Hi,I need your help in understanding the poor FSX performance on one of my computers. I have 2 similar computers running the exact same OS (Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit) with 4 GB DDR2-800 RAM , same Softwares and both have FSX Acceleration (including exact same addons) on a dedicated SATA hard drive (WD 7200 RPM 320GB and WD 7200 RPM 160 GB). No tweek applied to FSX.CFGI built both systems myself, following the same steps and sequence when installing OS, drivers and softwares. All drives show 0% fragmentation on both system (I defrag regularly using Win7 built-in defragger). BIOS settings are identical. The only major difference between the 2 systems is the CPU and video card. System 1: Asus P5Q (P45 chipset), C2D Quad Q9650 3.0GHz with Nvidia 8800GTX 768 MB drivers 182.50 (Vista 64) 1280x1024x32 (TH2G digital using single display mode only during comparison).System 2: Asus P5Q SE (P45 chipset), C2D E8400 3.0GHz with Nvidia GTX250 512MB drivers 182.50 (Vista 64) display 1680x1050x32.Previously, under Windows XP SP3, FSX performed almost the same way on both computers. But since moving both to Windows 7, there is a big difference in FPS and smoothness between the two using the exact same settings (FSX and drivers) and the exact same flight situation. My flight situation puts me on the threshold of a medium size airport in the default BE58. System 2 is great, with average 45 FPS, no fluctuation, no pause and no stutter.System 1 is the one giving me problem, with FPS fluctuating between 6 and 25, with lots of micro pauses and stutters. FPS really fluctuates a lot.Let me mention again that I am comparing using the same settings and flight situation on both computers. On system 1, I noticed that the "System Idle Process" always uses between 50 and 85% of CPU cycle when FSX is running, leaving FSX with 15-50% (mostly 20-25% average). System2 always shows FSX using 85-90% of CPU cycles.I believe that FSX could perform better on system 1 and probably without pause or stutter if FSX was using more CPU cycles. Out of curiosity, I replaced the video card on system 1 with a ATI HD5850 1GB DDR5 card but the performance remains the same (Cleaned the NVidia stuff with driver sweeper). What could be the reason for my system #1 to give me worst performance (almost 50% less) than the slightly less powerful system 2 ?I appreciate any thought you may have.

DA Cheyenne causes APPCRASH in FSX/Win 7 64-bit
Problem solved !!Thank you Jim for refering to Google. I feel ashamed of not having tought of doing a Google search on this, but if you don't mind, I'll put the blame on my half a century age :( Since I don't have (yet) any other 3rd party software installed for FSX, it had to do with the basic installation of the Cheyenne, and indeed it did. I was missing the TCAS2V7.DLL and .INI files (they are not included in my copy of the Cheyenne 4 installation download). After installing the Cheyenne, I initially made the mistake of installing the TCAS files inside the "Gauges" folder, which created the problem. But they actually go inside the FSX's root folder. No more APP CRASH now and the Cheyenne performs very well under FSX/Acceleration and Windows 7 (based on a 30 minutes VFR flight). The Cheyenne is my favorite GA aircraft and I highly recommend it if you like twin turboprops. It is a joy to fly when one follows the proper procedures and the owner's manual is well written. I've been flying it since March 2008 on my XP Pro/FSX machine and now I'll be able to continue enjoying it under Windows 7 64-bit.Thank's again Jim, the word "Google" gave me all I needed to hunt for the correct fix.Best regards,Normand.

DA Cheyenne causes APPCRASH in FSX/Win 7 64-bit
Hi,I've posted this in the Digital Aviation forum but I did not receive any rely so far. Hope to have better chance here.I recently moved from XP PRO 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit (fresh install of Win 7) and re-installed FSX, Acceleration and the Piper Cheyenne V4.00. I am administrator, FSX is ran as administrator and the Cheyenne installer was ran as administrator. My problem: Everytime I try to select the Piper Cheyenne V4.00 in FSX (any model), under Windows 7 64-bit, I get an APPCRASH in FSX caused by "DA.PA31Avionics.DLL". I cannot understand why. Could anyone give me a clue ?FSX runs fine otherwise in Win 7 and I never had any problem with the Cheyenne under Windows XP Pro SP3.Thank's in advance,Normand.
