CPU/RAM upgrade decision (Intel 12th Gen / DDR5)

Featured Replies

Hey members!

Looking for your feedback and comments in order to decide. Last year I built a PC with the following specs:

CPU: Intel i7 10700KF @4.9 GHz all cores.
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance RGB PRO 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3600
GPU: ASUS Dual RTX 3070 OC.
MB: ASUS TUF-Gaming-Z590-PLUS-WIFI (DDR4)
– ignoring all other PC parts.

Currently I’m highly interested in buying the i9 12900K but as we all already know, that will require to change the MB to support the 1700 socket with the Z690. So here comes the question and the decision… Is it better/recommended to upgrade to DDR5 and Z690 (considering how expensive it is the DDR5 sticks now) or just stay with DDR4 and Z690, but with the future “issue” that it would require a future upgrade again to get some good DDR5 sticks? Would you prefer to make the “full” investment now or later?

Thanks a lot for your comments and help in advance!

Oh man I don't think I would do it - your CPU is still really solid!

I did a 12700K upgrade but that was because my cpu was pretty old (4790K 4.4GHz).  Obviously I saw a massive difference - at least double fps in all scenarios...sometimes triple hehe.

Also the reason I went DDR5 board is because I only do major PC updates once about every 10 years or so.  I don't think the difference between your ddr4 ram and ddr5 would be very much at all.

I agree with Ryan, I wouldn't bother upgrading at all for flight simulator usage, unless you're just doing it for fun and money is no object, because I don't think you'd see much performance improvement. If you're doing a lot of multitasking and multithreaded stuff outside of flight sim you may see more benefit.

Right now DDR5 is not just more expensive, it's also no faster than good DDR4. Faster DDR5 chips will come in future but if you spec DDR5 now, it's to provide you an upgrade path in 2+ years not for gains today.

In summary I think you should get at least another 18 months very rapid usage (relative to current state of the art) out of your existing setup), before needing to seriously consider an upgrade.

Stay with what you have. A few years back I built one with I9-9900k, 2080-8gig, 32 gigs ram, M.2 drives etc and it is still solid. Save your money. Down the road if you still want to upgrade something and the price comes down maybe have a look at a 3090.
