Quest 2. Is smooth and sharp not possible flying low & Fast?

Featured Replies

Hi all.  I am still struggling to get it looking smooth when looking out of the sides when flying low and fast with the default F18.

I have improved the looks a little by upping the custom resolution in the open xr tool to 200% this seems to make it look better, but may be my imagination !

However  in the oculus app I am having to keep it low on 1 x   If I increase this  it looks far better but really get some stutters .

am I perhaps expecting  for too much? I.e Is it either smooth and low res or high res and jerky?

My pc is I7 12700 (some thing  like that- away from it at the moment  )with a 3800gtx  on windows 11  32 gig Ram

Any tips would really be helpful  eg do I have super sampling on off in msfs?  I see Motion reprojection mentioned in various places should this be on/ off and where do I set it?

I see posts saying how fantastic the visuals are now on the quest but I don’t seem to be able to achieve this without making it horribly stuttering.   The immersion is great , if I could only improve the visuals I  would be sooo happy.

Thanks  to anyone who takes the trouble to offer some advise

Cheers

Yeah, fast planes and / or flying low is tough for the gpu. Try the different reprojection modes that the quest has, as this has helped me a few times

HI,  thanks for the reply  how do you select different "reprojection modes"  and which works best  for you?

@Bozdog I'm new to VR and have tried a Rift (loaned to me by a friend) and now I just bought a Quest 2 a month ago and from what it seems to me, the tech is just not there yet in terms of providing sharp and clear visuals in many games, especially in games that are notorious for being resource hogs, such as msfs.

You'll only get so far with the visual clarity because the Quest 2 is an especially slow machine due to the shortcomings of it's software not working as efficiently as some others like the G2, from what I've heard. The Q2 is all about versatility, and it doesnt do any one thing particularly well or better than anyone else.

The Q2 also seems to have a VERY small sweet spot...a few mm either way and things can get blurry real fast so keep that in mind. Once you get it set onto your head just right so things seem fairly clear then you'll have to constantly be moving your head (not your eyes) so that whatever you're looking at directly will stay in that sweet spot...or else things will seem very blurred.

The other issue is fooling with the settings enough (which can be very time consuming), so that you get rid of as much of the jaggies and blurriness of the sim without that hindering the headset's ability to process and keep things as smooth as possible as far as the fps is concerned.

Having such a resource hungry application performing well in a Q2 (or any headset really) is not an easy feat, and you will only get so far due to the limitations of the vr tech. it still requires too much p[rocessing power for where we're at currently. Also, don't forget that the Q2 doesn't even plug directly into your GPU, it plugs into USB3 which is slower so there's that to consider as well. it would speed things up if it plugged directly into your graphics card and didn't need to do all that compression for usb.

@hanger  Thanks a lot for the info,  I guess I was expecting a little too much from the Quest. I have to remember it was just 30% of the price of the G2. When I was looking for a headset the G2 shot up from £550 to over £1000 in a week. So the quest seemed a good compromise.

Its still great fun with it as use it for a lot more than msfs .

I will take with a pinch of salt those utube videos saying  they are getting fabulous graphics with really smooth frame rates  seems its all about compromise.  I was trying to optimise it for low and fast assuming if that was set up then everyting else would be fine too, when I really only do slow anyway !

Thanks for the info really appreciated

Cheers

@Bozdog I think that the Q2 is great fun as well...I really enjoy it's ability to let me play all sorts of apps and games and to also allow me how to choose whether i want to play them wirelessly (Air Link), natively (installed directly onto the headset), or via pc cable (Link). The Q2 can be a VERY convenient headset and since it has such "long legs" I don't mind giving up a little bit of resolution and performance. I think that considering it's many quality of life features, as well as popularity in the add-on markets, it gives you the best overall experience for the money spent.

If you're like me and use a headset for other apps besides flying on pc then the Quest 2 is hard to not recommend. it's the jack of all trades and makes an excellent first headset for someone.

@hanger just a quick note to thank you again for your advise.  Today decided  no more playing with settings just fly. Opted for just the default Extra. Vr does amaze me, I did a tour of all the Washington sights , followed by Hawaii and then  Shanghai at night. When I was 11 used to live in the New Territories in Hong Kong, flying over there and seeing the house I lived in over 40 years ago is still there, and remembering all the nearby locations was mind boggling.  The graphics may not be as sharp as 2d but  cant see myself ever going back  to 2d.

I am now enjoying it so much more not obsessing over getting it a little sharper

@Bozdog Glad to hear that you're having some fun over there! I've been doing so many things with vr lately like car racing sims, flying, table tennis, fps shooters, and several fitness apps. In fact I've been working out so much that I'm starting to hurt myself and need to slow down. I'm 57 and like alot of men have an inguinal hernia that I'm nursing 🙂

Keep us posted about your new experiences, would love to hear about them. It IS quite strange how flying in VR has a way of really making you feel that you're actually going somewhere, or ARE somewhere (besides home).
