What to do with old system at Win10 end of lifecycle

Featured Replies

I have two computers with Win 10 (updated for free from Win 7 ). One with a PhenomX4 CPU and the other with a haswell 4770K which is my sim computer. I see that Win 10 will retire in 2025.
What options are there after that ? My system does not support Win 11 so upgrading OS is not an option. I surely can not think if throwing out my haswell system in 2025.
Also I see that Win 11 will retire two years earlier than Win 10. That is really strange. I was under the impression that there should never be any Win 11 (or Win 12) just continuous Win 10 updates

  • 1 month later...

Win 10 won't turn into a pumpkin and stop working at it's official end-of-life--it just stops getting updates.  I still have an old laptop on Win 7 here that's used for a couple task-specific purposes.  Because it doesn't get security updates any more, I won't use it for online banking, e-mail, web surfing etc.  Same goes with an old Win XP/Vista desktop that I ocasionally fire up to use a couple old pieces of hardware that never got 64-bit drivers and a couple old but still functional software titles.

I think that 2023 Win 11 retirement date is for version 21H2--as I read it they release a feature update once per year, with a retirement date for that version 24 months later.  So I'd expect Win 11 to retire 24 months after the final feature update is released, whenever that happens.  It wouldn't make much sense for people to upgrade Win 10 to Win 11 only to have it orphaned two years earlier than Win 10 would have been.

So your sim computer should be able to keep simming after Win 10 updates go dark, but you may want another PC for general use.

I use mine as the second computer linked via FSUIPC and WIDEFS.  Runs weather, charts, simbrief, Vatspy, checklists, etc, etc.  Works great.

The part with not using it for web surfing e-mail is tricky and a problem. I plan to upgrade my current Haswell system to a new sim game platform and then getting a new Windows license for it. The old haswell would be for other tasks like programming and access to the web and mail is necessary.

Were that not rumors of Windows 12 coming fairly soon ?
