June 14, 20223 yr Hmmm, I'm afraid the same virus that hit me in MS FLIGHT times is now back again... Flight Challenges Addiction Virus ... I have been trying to fly the various F-18 challenges, namely the carrier landing. In the carrier mission they mention the takeoff & landing tutorials, but where are these ? There's a takeoff challenge, and I did that one where after takeoff you have to keep 10º pitch and then as you go past 300 knot indicated you chang to 45º for the climb to 10,000' but, where is the mentioned carrier takeoff tutorial ? Also, why should one set he throttles to MIL power after being successfully arrested ? I think the Mil power selection on touchdown/arrest is to ensure a successful re-launch should you miss the cable or the aircraft arrestor gear on the ship or on the aircraft fails in some way. You'd be going for an expensive swim otherwise! No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea. Sorry Goose, but it's time to buzz the tower! When you takeoff from a carrier the first thing you do a 20 degrees turn left or right as you take over after the launch, then you turn back onto your original heading. Then you stay below 600 ft until your 6 miles out from the carrier. Then you turn climb to…. You go full after burner on touch down to make sure you can take off again if your hook does not catch a wire. Edited June 14, 20223 yr by Nyxx David Murden. June 14, 20223 yr As others have noted, it is standard procedure to firewall the throttle upon touchdown in case you bounce over the arrestor wire and have to do a go around for another try. This is why there are typically four arrestor wires, to give you a good chance of trapping one, but if you are doing it super-perfectly, you'll catch the third wire; this is so your mainwheels miss the other wires, but you still have a chance to catch the fourth one. You will always see aeroplanes throttle up on on a carrier landing and then throttle down when they know they are properly caught by the wire. This is also why navy fliers call themselves aviators, because 'aviators are better than pilots' as they say. If you miss the wires, and have to go around, this is called a 'bolter', so the Landing Signals Officer transmits 'bolter, bolter, bolter' to the crew to confirm it. Navy carrier landings are rated from 0-5, and a bolter is rated as 2.5 providing it was reasonably safe but unluckily bounced over the wire.
