So, basically even the full version must have the app running on cell phone concurrently with the sim? It is the cell phone that hears me and not the plug in through my headset mic?

Yes and yes.

I wouldnt go as far as saying must, the plugin on its own is still a good, performant, ai traffic plugin which does a decent job of adding simulated busy airspace. Most people using it just use it for that.

Originally the phone app was just the voice recognition, because there wasn't - and still isn't - a decent cross platform speech to text solution.

Then I added the groundschool in response to "how do I use it" feedback (which was fundamentally a "how do I use an aircraft radio" feedback), and autocorrect in response to the fact even google speech recognition isnt 100%, and things like it recognising "runway" as "runaway" was causing problems.

I have lately been working with MCE in P3D. I use my headset. Now that I know how to key my mic properly and select my words correctly it seems very ingenious with default ATC. I will wait and see what Austin does with it in 12. For now when I fly in X-plane I just file direct for towered fields and go through the motions for untowered. (UNICOM) pretend.
