When running VR mode is the only time you will really be wanting for a bit more, but you only have to turn down a couple things. Hi, how have you found the 6900XT for smoothness in MSFS? Any concerns as I'm considering switch to one from a 3080 10GB for the VRAM gain given the prices are starting to drop. Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX 5090, 64GB, Win 11. MSFS2020. It would only be a tiny gain from the 3080, as the performance is almost the same. It was smooth I guess, but there are some issues with AMD and DEV mode. Also some issues with MSFS and DirectX 12 as well. The other big issue I had was when I had the REVERB G2 plugged in, Windows kept resetting my GPU's refresh rate to 30hz (from 60). I cannot say if that was the AMD's fault, but probably. I could just keep changing it back, but it was a nuisance. Since I am mainly developing more than flying, I decided to return it and get a 3080 12GB instead, mainly because also some other rendering tools tend to require custom settings when you have an AMD. For just gaming, I think you'll be fine, but I think the AMD's are a bit louder when they are heavily loaded. They are quieter under average to moderate load, but louder when they get real hot. I didn't like the AMD software, it drove me nuts. It was good in theory, but overall poorly designed. Edited September 5, 20223 yr by Alpine Scenery AMD 5800x | Nvidia 3080 (12gb) | 64gb ram
September 5, 20223 yr Thanks for your thoughts - much appreciated. The 3080 12GB is my other option as I'm not planning on changing my screen resolution anytime soon so the extra 2GB would likely be sufficient. I'm assuming you would recommend the 3080 12GB over the 6900XT? Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX 5090, 64GB, Win 11. MSFS2020. Moza, MFG, Fulcrum & Virpil controllers. Quest 3 for VR.

Unless you just have money burning a hole in your pocket, I cannot see the extra memory being worth it. AMD 5800x | Nvidia 3080 (12gb) | 64gb ram

Getting a much more powerful GPU will see me doing the whole lot - Mobo, PSU, CPU and RAM as well. I was thinking something more short term then look at an upgrade a year or two down the line as the new platform and prices stabilise. The delta cost of the upgrade just now wouldn't be too much given I got the FE at rrp. I'll likely wait for SU10 first though and see how DX12 changes the landscape. It may help balance the system a little bit more. Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX 5090, 64GB, Win 11. MSFS2020. Moza, MFG, Fulcrum & Virpil controllers. Quest 3 for VR.
