August 18, 20223 yr Crazy temperatures in Italy today Currently, there is 23° C difference between Milan Malpensa LIMC apt where the temperature is 20° C (68 F) and Palermo LICJ apt (Sicily) where 43° C (109 F) is recorded.
August 18, 20223 yr I remember living in the SF Bay Area some really huge differences sometimes, i.e. just crossing the Golden Gate Bridge from the city and going a little bit north, completely normal during summer. But Italy seemed way more uniform temperature wise when I went there in the summer, inland, coast, it didn't seem to matter, it was hot everywhere. Sure is crazy weather in a lot of places. https://www.sfgate.com/weather/article/heat-wave-San-Francisco-Bay-Area-weather-16254592.php "At 2 p.m., in just over 6 miles distance, there is a 34 degree temperature difference between Half Moon Bay (62°) and Crystal Springs Reservoir (96°)!" August 18, 20223 yr The San Francisco Bay Area is a unique area. There are over 20 micro-climate zones between San Jose and Vallejo including the bay and the ocean shoreline. I was born and raised in San Francisco and we later moved to Mill Valley (in the early 50s before real estate prices went bonkers). I was a weather forecaster in the Colorado Air National Guard when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit. Folks from my unit were sent to 6th Army HQ (located in the Presidio at the time) to do weather support for the emergence operation center there. One of the first thing I did was get a large topo map of the area and had one of my weather observers draw arrows along all of the upslopes on the ocean front and the area surrounding the bay so we could get a handle on what the winds were doing. Even when we lived in the Russian Hill district and I was taking the bus to school in the avenues there was a noticeable difference in the local weather. Clear and brisk when I left home in the morning and foggy and damp where the school was located. (The old St Ignatius High School on Stanyan Street). Noel Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

This entire "micro-climate" phenomenon is fascinating. Happens in my neck of the woods. During the recent heat wave, there was quite a difference between coastal temperature and inland, and that's on an island that's only 24 square miles. On the Island of Herm, 30 minute ferry ride away or 10 minutes on a RIB, the micro-climate phenomenon is profound. My daughter was sweating and had to take her coat off in DECEMBER! The massive body of water that is the ocean, and factors like the nearby Gulf Stream have a significant impact. In fact shell beach is composed of millions of tiny shells that have been washed up by the Gulf Stream. This is what gives the sand on Herm its flawless colour. Weather and climate and the factors that influence it is a fascinating subject. Hopefully, "Weathertron" (Ray) will turn up and give us a few more insights into the phenomenon.
August 19, 20223 yr Author Yesterday the significant difference in temperatures between Northern and Southern Italy caused the confluence of these two air masses very severe weather conditions and one of the most affected areas of Italy was Tuscany where unfortunately there were two victims and numerous injuries due to very strong thunderstorms with winds up to 140 km / h. In this video you can see the effect of these winds on a Ferris wheel.
