Question for real world pilots.  How long did it take before you tried your first landing?  I've been using flightsim for 25 years, so I thought I'd try some real world flying.  It's very different than in the sim, and though I'm doing takeoffs, I've never done an unassisted landing.

Yes, it is very different than the sim.

The time for your first landing varies from student to student.  When your instructor thinks you are ready he will let you land by yourself.  Be patient.  And the more lessons you can take in a period of time the sooner you will be able to land by yourself.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I got my glider pilot license in October 1980, but instruction started july 1 1980.

Was solo after maybe 16 flights in the Blanik L-13, but it took a while for the instructor to believe I wouldn't smash the glider into the runway because "flare" was a concept that took some time for me to understand 🤣

That's the carrier landing pilot in me !

All the Best for your course, and don't stress at how many times / how long it takes for this or that - learn, the best way because that's what really matters !

P.S.: Flare is still something I use parsimony with 🙂

Good question, had me digging out my old log books. I started my PPL in December 1972 at Oxford UK EGTK, courtesy of the Civil Aviation Authority, I'd just been accepted to train as an air traffic controller, and the 1st course they put you on was the PPL course. 20 years old, didn't even have a driving licence, and I get paid to train for a PPL, it doesn't get better than that!

They don't do that anymore, new trainees get very little flying experience.

I did my first solo after 12 hours 20 mins, but it was a residential course, so much more concentrated than the average PPL course, where most trainees fly once a week, we flew every day, weather permitting. It was December/January in the UK, so we did get grounded a lot due to the weather.

Did my 1st solo at Sywell airfield EGBK, 11th January 73, grass runways, they took us there for our circuits as the Oxford circuit was too busy for ab initios, Cherokee 140 GAYKX. It was my 3rd flight of the day, both previous flight around an hour, so my instructor must have been putting me through it!

Got my PPL after 35 hours, which was the minimum required hours. In July that year with a  grand total 39 hours 10 minutes under my belt, I flew C172 GBAKK from Luton EGGW, to London Heathrow EGLL, then on up to Birmingham EGBB. You could in those days special VRF, and although the landing fee was steep, it wasn't crazy money.

Those were the days
