Flight to the Future with Noel Neill 1952

I recognized her right away from old Superman reruns. Cool to see all the clunky old gadgets, that were probably the height of moderna, then.

"Promotional film for the pioneering American plastics company that surveys the contribution of plastics to everyday life. Flight to the future in the World of Plastics is structured as a discussion on a transcontinental flight, during which three plastics experts (a manufacturer, an engineer, and a designer) tell the flight attendant about their industry. Over the course of the film, a multitude of plastics products are shown". - Noel Neill, Robert Lowery, George Wallace, Helen Winston, John Eldredge, Charles Evans, Tom Wilde, Lyle Talbot.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

I watched all 38 minutes of that.  Fascinating, and certainly plastics are a wonderful product.

But they left out one very important detail.  They never figured out a way to dispose of it.

So that man's grandchildren's grandchildren, who would be around 30 years old now, are seeing not only a sea of plastics in our daily lives but literally seas full of plastics.

Speaking of disposing of plastics, be careful how you do it.

Years ago I was helping the family of a co-worker pack up their things to move.  The wife was burning things they wanted to get rid of in their fireplace.  She dumped a box full of small plastic items in the fireplace.  I told her to rake them back about.  Many common plastics produce phosgene gas when burned.  Phosgene was a war gas used in WW1.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

She was a real Lady, and avoided the temptation of  pulling of Clark Kent's glasses for a quick peek.

BTW, everybody is talking about plastics.

Almost all the tubes in the dozen or more antique radios in our living room have bakelite bases.
