Is the Intel ME Driver good to install?

Featured Replies

I did a complete reinstall of Win 10 and noticed this on the motherboard CD as an optional driver to install.  I ask because for reasons I don't understand I cannot get MSI Afterburner/RTSS to display Frame Rate, whereas it does display other values I'm after.  W/ the prior install frame rate did display.  I've used two different version of MSI-A to no avail.  Framerate is greyed out so non selectable.  I don't recall if I installed in previously, but didn't this time.

Cheers

Its Management Engine drivers i.e motherboard driver for the mentioned device. Windows update would have picked that up automatically. Nothing to do with Afterburner e.t.c.

You can check in device manager to see if it's done it or shows as (PCI Communication device) in which case you'll have to manually dload/install it.

Thanks for that--not seeing PCI Comm Device anywhere in DM.  My question also is, is it safe/good to install, do I need it?  Win 10 says no updates are due.

Oh good. W/U also would pick up the Chipset serial IO and GNA stuff too. It's basically part of the ecosystem of the machine so best not touch it and just let updates upgrade the lot. Nvidia or AMD Video drivers are a contentious issue however with DX 12 best use the latest and be prepared to backup and restore if anything artifacts or bugs.

What's good, so should I install it from my mobo support disk, or just let WU decide?  Speaking of artifacts--when I use QuickView hat switch now when the view goes back to forward I always get a little partial repeat in the direction I quickviewed, and never had this prior to this reinstall.  Might this be the newest NV driver?  I'm using DX11 currently.

No. Just let Update sort it. Disk is only for Offline install/No Internet (Assuming Intel machines). Same to use disk for Videocard if there's no net.

So basically install the Windows then after Goto windows update reboot when asked then update everything in the store app then install FS2020 in Xbox app and copy the folder or point to the directory where the sim resides and finally any 3rd party apps and anything else.

517.48 is the latest for the 30xx series (Nvidia website) however without seeing what's going on i just assume it's the Videocard driver (Set for high performance not quality). Others could chime in and maybe give an actual explanation of what's happening.

Definitely don’t let Windows install your core motherboard drivers. They will likely be several versions old and potentially, highly generic, not for your specific motherboard hardware. It will work (mostly) but you may lose out on certain features of your motherboard. I also suggest chucking the CD that came with your motherboard though…. Go to MSI’s website, find your motherboard there and install the very latest versions of the motherboard drivers from their website. You wouldn’t let Windows update your GPU driver. MB drivers are no different and just as critical for solid system performance. 😉

This is a good idea too. That way you can find your latest BIOS too. Although initially you would let windows update itself and then overwrite with new chipset ME and the other drivers.

My question has only to do with the Intel ME driver, all the other chipset drivers were installed off the mobo CD and the mobo is approaching 3y/o.  The ME driver is a separate checkbox as the basic chipset drivers were another checkbox.  Thanks, from what I read the ME driver is mostly for remote administrative access, and after getting everything up and running it's back to normal after a brief period of messed up performance in MSFS which now I assume may well have had to do with Bejan's most recent season files vis a vis SU10.

Cheers

Me/Chipset and Lan/Wifi/Bluetooth are all separate drivers and are basically needed for the Z390 board. Serial IO and GNA are 11/12 gen additions to those others. I think they keep what the ME system does a kept secret as to not bother the consumer and to wonder what they do with it.

I see, so you are saying the ME driver should be installed for normal PC use, correct?

You realize that the chipsets are all using the exact same Intel/AMD hardware (each Z390 is the exact same parts, for example) and they're all using generic Realtek sound/network hardware (or maybe generic Intel network adapter chips). Pretty much everything that needs a driver is generic.

And FWIW, driver software has a list of PCI vendor and part IDs. It won't install on anything it doesn't know what to do with.
