It's been almost 80 years now since we lost Glenn Miller. His orchestra and his contribution to music is, IMNSO, without peer. But maybe I'm biased by my connection to his family.

Back in my college days Glenn's nephew, Ritchie, was my roommate. Glenn's brother Herb was "the band" to hire for any special occasion in the town where I lived. Those were the days when I learned to love the big band sound.

Glenn's nephew John (Ritchie's brother) is carrying on with the Miller sound through the John Miller Orchestra.

There's a lot more to this story but just let me close by saying RIP Glenn. We miss you.

 

 

Glen Miller was lost on flight from London to Paris in a Norseman.  It's believed they went down over the Channel.

There was nothing before or since like the Big Band Sound.  And Glenn Miller was the best of the best.

One thing about that read.  It implied Glen Miller was enlisted.  He was actually commissioned...a major.

As for the fisherman who snagged something on the bottom of the English Channel there must be 100 or more German, British and American aircraft at the bottom of the English Channel.  Unless it could be identified as a Norseman the chances are remote it would be Miller's aircraft.

But listing his hits reminded me of a kinda lame joke that was going around when I was in high school.  I'm surprised I remember it.

When Patton was in England in 1943 he ran into Charlie Chaplain who had just married a young dancer named Oona O'Neil.  Charlie invited George to watch Oona perform a ballet number at a benefit show that evening.

Charlie invited George who, was wearing his pearl handled revolver, into Oona's dressing room to meet her.  But he warned George, "Oona's a kleptomaniac, so make sure everything you have is in your pockets."

Then they went out to sit with the audience and watch the show. 

As Oona pirouetted on stage for her ballet number Charlie turned to George ands said...OK here goes..."Patton me boy, is that your gat in Oona's tutu."

I told you it was a groaner!

Just a slight correction. Patton's pistol handles were ivory, not pearl. He always said that only a pimp would carry a pistol with pearl handles.
