January 5, 20233 yr Hi All Is it possible to have a MSFS install on more than one drive? (MS Store purchase) Reason I ask is that my main SSD containing my MSFS install is nearly at capacity, so I was wondering if I can simply put future updates (mandatory/world etc) on a new drive (if so, how do you do this?) or whether I need to move everything (existing instal plus future updates) on to a new larger SSD drive so all in one place. My preference would be to leave existing instal where it is and just put future updates on new drive, but am not sure if this is possible? Any thoughts/help gratefully received. Thanks
January 5, 20233 yr The updates will all be in the Community and Official folders. And you can only have one of each. So you can for instance move the community folder to another drive, or move the official folder to another drive. But that's about all you can do by way of separation. 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.
January 5, 20233 yr You can't split the official into 2 folders. Nor the community. 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. January 5, 20233 yr Paul, afaik the official folder must remain in the original directory. Why not use Addon Manager and put Community on another drive. Then you have the added content in a large drive and only the links its base directory.
January 5, 20233 yr You can move the Content.. Official and Community together, to a new drive. Instructions can be found in this forum. Bert
January 5, 20233 yr I moved both community and official long ago. MSFS doesn't care where they are located. Regardless of where the Community folder is located, it can be completely empty of folders full of content and just hold link folders instead. This for instance is what Addon Linker does. Link folders take up very little space, almost nothing. Addon Linker normally works with community folder, not the official folder. You could leave the community folder on the system drive. And uses links (Addon Linker) to empty its contents of all real data and let it just contain links to that real data. Meanwhile the Addon Linker folder holds the real data and it can be put on a disc that has lots of space. You could also forget about addon linker and just move both community and official folders to any drive that the computer can see. Then boot up MSFS and at the searching for updates screen of MSFS go to the bottom of the screen and type the new path there. If you make any mistake typing that path, then MSFS will reinstall everything. If you type the correct path to where you moved community and official folders, then MSFS will not need to re install anything except one tiny file which takes about 10 seconds. 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. January 5, 20233 yr Every time anyone boots up MSFS it goes to the Checking for Updates screen. What it does now is to make sure you have Community and Official folders in the path shown at the bottom of that screen. And it checks what is in those 2 folders. If anything necessary is missing, then it reinstalls them from the cloud. 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. If you want to avoid this step, you can edit the last line in the UserCfg.opt file and type in the location there. Create a new folder on your chosen drive, say drive G.. give it a name, say MSFS_Content, copy (or move) the Community and Official folders to this folder, and type in: InstalledPackagesPath "G:\MSFS_Content" Edited January 5, 20233 yr by Bert Pieke Bert
