Pico4 and 3080

Recommended Posts

I read that the RTX 3080 is not suitable for  the Pico 4. Surely you can use it , can you ?. and just how low do you need your settings ?

My flightsim computer is out of action at the moment . I run P3D v5 but intend to install MSF2020 on it when it comes back into action ( unlessP3d V6 comes into existence, maybe)

It's like saying this 4k monitor is not suitable for your pc which I think is kind of weird. Of course you can use it - but you'll have to give something like lower graphics settings. I believe, a 3080 will do okay.

I'm using a PICO 4 with a 3090, having most of the settings on high (+ DSSL) with okayish FPS (55 - 70) - on every other game it would be to less for me but it works in MSFS 2020. How low you need to go depends on how sensible you're in VR regarding low, probably stuttering FPS. If high FPS is king for you you'll loose probaly too much visual fidelity and prefer playing none-VR on a (4k) monitor, it will run and look better.

I'm using a Pico4 with a GTX1070ti, of course with lower resolution (barely superior to the Pico native one), but it works 🙂

So your 3080 is going to be ok 😉

Thank you for the response. Sounds obvious now - lower the settings. Something I was having to do on my previous rig , so I'm well used to that.

I think my plans are changing with the advent of the Crystal. Seems as though the 3080 runs it quite well.

Cheers ...Alan

Keep your Pico4 for now and see what you will really get out of it. May it be with Virtual Desktop or with Streaming Assistant, things have changed a lot in the latest versions and I'm quite happy with it. I use it mainly connected via USB, which is supported by Streaming Assistant natively. See how much you'll have to "lower" your settings with the Pico before spending 1000$ on a new headset + 150-300$ for the tracking stations....

Does the difference from 128GB to 256GB matter? Thanks

Daube what CPU do you use? I have a i9-9900k and a RTX 2080. Should be playable?

The internal memory size doesn't matter at all. That is only storage place, for the people that use the Pico4 "internal" game store to play without a computer.

I'm using an i7 8700k coupled with a GTX1070-ti. It's a very old computer now, and I have to lower drastically my settings to use the VR. I'm very far away from the other people on this forum that hesitate to buy 3 or 4 more RTX4090 to fuel their Varjo(s), because they think the game looks like unacceptable in Ultra settings at less than 8k resolution, and feels unplayable if it's below 90 FPS...

I come from the crowd that, until very recently, were very happy with the very first VR headsets generation. I switched from a Lenovo Explorer (WMR headset) that had 1440x1440 pixels per eye, to the Pico4 that displays 2160x2160 per eye. I have to keep my render scale in MSFS around 80%. I have to keep my terrain and objects LOD below 80 as well. And still, I am VERY happy with the result I get on my old computer.

And once I get my next computer with more decent hardware, my Pico4 will be able to provide a much more beautiful render.

Can I connect to a MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon? I remember to have no bluetooth and have never used wifi. No idea if that works. Is the USB cable only for power?

Could I connect to this motherboard a PCI Express 4 graphicscard?

You can connect it to any USB 3.0 plug.

The USB cable can be used for two things: recharge the battery and transmit the video signal.

The video signal can be transmitted by Wifi if you have a fast-enough Wifi 6 router next to your computer, or by USB connection. To use the USB connection, you can use the original video streamer app from Pico, which is called Streaming Assistant/ That application is split into two parts: one "client" that you install on your computer, and one "app" that you install into your headset. The client part will ask you if you want to connect by Wifi or by USB Cable.

Please note that, at some point, you'll need some Wifi connection for your headset to access the network, so that you can reach the Pico store, download updates for the headset and controllers firmwares, updates for the apps in your headset, etc...

Something I forgot to add: the USB-c to USB 3.0 cable is NOT part of the Pico package. You have to buy one separately. The original package only includes a very small USB cable and power supply to recharge the headset, that's all.

I bought that cable: https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B098399X91/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There is another way to connect your Pico 4 to your PC, which is what I'm using with great results. I found I got better image quality and stability using Virtual Desktop over Pico Streaming Assistant. I use a USB to Ethernet adapter from the Pico 4 and plug the Ethernet adapter into a cheap gigabit switch which is also connected to my PC and the network. I get a solid 1200Mbps connection to the PC and by using an Ethernet adapter with a USB power port, i can keep my Pico charged while simming. It's not as clean as the straight USB direct with Streaming Assistant, but it allows me to use Virtual Desktop and get better image quality.

Indeed, why is the necessary cable not provided in the kit. I also bought a new one and not only for Pico.

Well, the Pico is advertised as "wireless" and "standalone" after all. It was not exactly meant for PCVR, and in that case we are supposed to use it via Wifi mainly (in theory).

So I suppose the USB connection is just a kind of (very welcome) bonus connection method 🙂

Please have a look at my post on a similar thread.   Post #47 on Page 4.

Your thoughts would be most welcome.   Thanks!
