Sometimes PG works - around Philly (mostly scenery shots)

Featured Replies

I've been whingeing about the state of the PG in a couple of recent posts about Calgary, but like I said there, it's very much a lucky dip sort of thing with PG. Here's some shots around Philadelphia, where I've been playing around with the MKStudios KPHL. I did a flight out from KPHL to Princeton (had to drop some supplies in to the kids <grin>) and the PG around Philadelphia is not bad at all. A few of the unfortunate vegetation uglifacts (half tree/half concrete bunker) in a few places, but apart from that it works pretty well here, and you can actually get quite close before it goes off.

Like I said previously, when it works it's pretty impressive. It just doesn't work the same everywhere, unfortunately.

So, headed out from KPHL

and over downtown Philly

Local time around 06.40, so a bit of glare going on

but it does give some nice shadows and contrasts

Some of the PG is really impressive. If you look at this one full screen, particularly on a big 4k monitor, you can see some nicely done graffiti on the building bottom front, right of centre.

The light and the general quality of the street level stuff makes it feel like an old '70s movie still to me. I can imagine Gene Hackman roaring around down there, or maybe De Niro.

I also got the RKBridger's package for this area. I've got a lot of them. They're a bit pricey, but they are well done and until AsoboSoft get their act together with this stuff they make a big difference for me. Probably not worth buying if you're a cockpit-botherer, but for my type of exploration they're well worth having.

This is another one of those details that I love. Finding little scenes like this strip mall. It does have the run of uglifacts in front of it, but even so, it has a wonderful air of mundane detail. Having a hand crafted Tower of Pisa is good, but I love this sort of thing more.

And off to Princeton. Not much to see on most of that journey from what I remember, so unless I can find any good detail of the college buildings there I probably won't post anything from the rest of the flight.

Photogrammetry is a great advance of this marvelous sim. It'll only get better over time, after corrections of the current PG on some very specific areas.

It's also important to have a good internet connection speed to make it work wonderfully.

Cheers, Ed

Most impressive! Been to Philly often in RL, but now I feel like I've really seen it!

These are more than acceptable to me Andy, they look great and hopefully this desktop simulator will get better.  I'd hate to see MS shut it all down like they did with FSX.

Yep, I suspect there's a lot of work going on behind the scenes, and not necessarily driven by MSFS. This area (Philly) is certainly one of the good ones.

Cheers John. Never been in RL, but it looks interesting here, for sure

Cheers Jack. Out of our hands re the latter point, let's just hope . . .
