NCP - Enhance vs Override...

Recommended Posts

Trying to further optimize my "Spectacular" p3dv5.4 install, now with Orbx Global + Vector + LC Europe, smooth but still, at times, making my Ryzen 5600x with SMT Off cores rise to 80ºC, I tried setting AA in game to None, or 2 x MSAA and then use NCP to "Enhance" or to "Override" these settings.

.) It appears to me that "Enhance Mode" allows for a slightly better / smoother display, although not extraordinary, but...

.) Override appears to do nothing / NADA! to the AA, even when I set the AA and Supersampling in NCP to their top settings 😕

So, is NCP "Override Mode" useless for P3D? Why?

Hmmm... maybe because of this:

Tips for Setting Antialiasing (nvidia.com)

Override probably only makes sense IF the game itself doesn't allow for AA settings...

This explains why when setting  low AA level in P3D Graphics / Display menu and then complementing it with higher level AA and transparency in NCP appears to produce better results (?)

The old anti-aliasing problem in v5...

I'd like to know what the "definitive" solution is. Even with a 1440p screen, I don't like the result. It's the worst AA of all the games I have...

Is your concern with heat or AA?

Somehow this has never worked with DX10 and later. I remember the late NickN explained this in his FSX Bible.

Well, I'd say with both, because I would like to have some better AA than the lowest possible settings in game, but at the same time I hate to listen to my CPU fans spinning  like mad and the T rising to the 70+ºC sometimes reaching 80ºC.

Some will tell me to opt for a better cooling solution, but right now I am not able to invest in HW...

Strangely this "stress" took place while flying aloft, at cruise (FL330) level, and not as I descend towards the airports, sometimes overflying more dense scenery, and with weather that is surely at least as dense as it was at cruise level.

I downloaded a software I wasn't even aware of, but am having some difficulty understanding how to use it, and how it works - "Lorby P3D Addon Organizer". I will probably try to use it to disable, for instance, Open LC and or Vector and see if they have big impact.

What monitor res/hertz are you running?

How are you limiting frames?

1980 x 1024 @ 60 Hz

In game, no FPS limit and VSync is set to On.

In NCP Half Refresh Rate.

I get 28-32 fps as indicated by the game statistics (SHIFT-Z), 30 sharp in RTSS.

Since I've come across this video concerning graphics settings for p3d, don't really think there's anything better for making the sim look really sharp:

Give it a Try.😀

Looks like you have two separate issues you want to work on: AA and CPU temperatures.

Regarding CPU, what do you have set up in BIOS for overclocking/PBO? Your cooler looks better and stronger than mine. However, I'm getting lower temperatures than you, but maybe it's because I use ECO mode. I may lose 3-4 FPS that way, but I also lost around 10ºC (with SMT off).

Luis, ECO too, no overclocking ( never used it in CPUs or GPUs... it's like the Viagra of processors 🤣 ).

I use MSI Afterburner to limit the CPU and power ( linked ) to 80ºC.

In NCP I have "Maximum performance",ut I'll try to set it to "Normal" instead.

EDIT: I also decided to lower in-sim AA to 2xMSAA and then enhance it by 8xSSA through NCP, as well as 2xAF in-sim and 16x in NCP. Temperatures seldom go higher than 75-78ºC now, and keep between 65-72ºC mostly, which, well... feels acceptable forme because I really can't give up of P3D now that I am getting somuch joy from it... My "Green" bias has to close it's eyes to this 🙂

My 2 cents... overclocking does work and does make a difference overall, I mean hey... why sacrifice a free performance upgrade ?

My 5800x is clocked to 4.7 Ghz with SMT disabled where P3D does take advantage of the overclock as well as the dedication of whole processor cores (instead of splitting the processor core into 2 x threads).

I just aimed for the maximum CPU stated boost clock speed while keeping SMT disabled, that way the maximum CPU speed can be maintained without unmanagable production of heat, helps to have a great CPU cooler too, I have one of these (not black though) and even though SMT is disabled, P3D when under load does drive those cores to max temps, good on a cold day to heat the room 😉

Also with setting AA in NCP, I take it you mean you've set Antialiasing - Transparency ?

There are higher settings available via the Nvidia Profile Inspector, for instance you could set Transparency Super Sampling to Sparse Grid super sampling, the trick when using Sparse Grid super sampling is to set a value match of the P3D MSAA setting.

2 x SGSS means P3D would be set to 2 x MSAA, 4 x SGSS means P3D would be set to 4 x MSAA and so on, this is because there is a matched dependancy between the two types for proper operation and while it does provide pretty good AA, it is a GPU hog, meaning there is always a trade off.

There is also DSR in the NVidia Control Panel where you can set a resolution higher than that of the monitor's native resolution, this provides an adjustable smoothing effect which is quite helpful towards AA.

Additionally there is also reshade and the many AA filters included like SMAA, CMAA, FXAA, DLAA and TAA, all of which are adjustable.

So lots of options to play with, with the best being whatever your GPU can be pushed to handle without overloading.

Cheers

Some time ago I found NPI redundant and stopped using it. Apparently I was wrong...

Now, @Rogen, I really owe you a beer because although I had extensively used NPI in my FSX and early P3D times as well as with other simulators like DCS World and IL-2 Great Battles, I never used it since I restarted investing seriously in P3D again, and I just tried it and WOW for performance and visuals with just 2xMSAA in the sim and 2xSGSS through the default NPI profile for Prepar3d !

Big Thanks !!!
