December 11, 20232 yr I have decided to remove my MSFS2020 from C Drive to an WD External F Drive since C drive was almost 75% full, So i have decided to put the Flight Sim on its own drive. Yesterday i did the easy option to move the game via Apps to move from C to F but found that the FPS dropped and the game was not stable, So i have re formatted Drive F and will install direct from MS. I have just had a go at installing from Windows Store and it gave me a option to select the F drive, After a short download The games main window opens up and then asks to install updates which is the main download , I noted once i selected continue, It then tells me that its downloading to C Drive. Can anyone give me some advice on this. I am also deleting add-ons and i will install these once MSFS is working. Thank you for any help
December 11, 20232 yr You will lose performance on an external dive as the transfer data rate will be slower. All sims will install something on the windows dive it has to. That`s how an addon knows where the sim is on the PC your sim can be on any drive windows through the registry will tell it. Raymond Fry.
December 11, 20232 yr Never use an External drive for any flight sim, ever. That goes for FSX/P3D XPlane or MSFS.

But as said above, it will never run properly on an external drive, as the transfer protocol (presumably USB) is cripplingly slow compared to SATA or M.2 that an internal drive would use. December 12, 20232 yr Commercial Member Personally, I wouldn’t use an external hard drive for any game whatsoever. It’s asking for trouble, not only performance but file location/recognition wise.
December 12, 20232 yr Author I have a lenovo legion t5 and after doing some research, I believe that i can use the cables that are spare for a hard drive, So i just need to buy a good SSD just for the Sim. Maybe it will be a lot better on its own and i don't need to add windows to it and should be able to connect to my Xbox/windowss store account
