Learning RNAV...can this be right?

Not to go too far O/T but your post absolutely resonated with me - only because I was fortunate enough to get some time in the C-141 simulator at Norton back in the late 80's thanks to a friend in the CHP who had connections. Was a big deal to a non-pilot like me (2 successful landings!)  The wife and I lived in Mentone at the time on the other side of Redlands, downstream of the departure of RWY6.  It was always fascinating but a little unnerving to see you guys take off and then slowly sink a little bit down toward the orange groves while building up speed, heading directly toward our house before turning South.

This all resonates with me as well for a few reasons. First, I grew up out near Temecula, and I remember driving past Norton (and March) many many times growing up in the 70's and 80's. Always amazed me how close the runways at Norton were to the freeway we would be driving on. Then, in 1989 I joined the U.S. Army, became an Infantry Paratrooper and started jumping out of C-130's and C-141's. What a hoot that was! Missed jumping the 141's because all we had to do was walk out of the jump door at a 45 degree angle and the air flow and jet wash did the rest. C-130 jumps you literally had to jump hard out away from the aircraft at a 90 degree angle, to avoid becoming a static line injury. No nearly so much risk jumping out of the 141's. 

Oh, brings back some memories guys 🙂

l flew that high speed, swept winged, T-tailed bug sucker as well. Was a sad day when the C-17 started rolling in and took our good flights. Luckily I snuck over to the KC10 before the end date. That was some good flying, especially the good times down at no hope Pope dropping the 82nd.🤣

They were good times, indeed.  The first round of BRAC base closures, which included Norton, was announced the day I reported in there--my wife and I heard the announcement on the radio literally as we were driving down the hill on I-15 into San Bernardino.  I served five years there and still managed to get out of Dodge before they locked the gates.

Fifteen years later, I was at a conference hosted by 12th AF at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson.  They set up an executive tour of the AMARC boneyard for a few interested conference attendees, and while we were driving in via the back gate, a C-141B with its Norton tail flash still intact was coming out through the same gate on three flatbed trucks, on its way to the smelter after having just been guillotined.  I'll admit that seeing that left me a little bit choked up...

And in an attempt to not completely hijack the topic here...suffice it to say that minimum procedural separation in high-density airspace is often just that--minimal.  It's like that in dense urban airspace all around the world, and on a good number of the air routes as well.  On the North Atlantic Track system at night, sometimes it looks like you could walk between Newfoundland and Ireland on the backs of all the jets stacked up at 1000 ft intervals headed in the same direction.
