AMD Smooth Motion Frames with Prepar3D

Featured Replies

seems to work ok for me! AMD users should definitely try this out!

get about double the frames from before, although they suggest the base frames should be 60+, it looked pretty smooth to me when i was under that.

Hello Level7. Did you find any artifacts when using P3D (either v4 or v5) with AFMF?

Main rig: self built, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (with SMT off and CO -50 mV), 2x16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, Nvidia RTX 5060Ti 16GB, 256 GB M.2 SSD (OS+apps) + 2x1 TB SATA III SSD (sims) + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (storage), ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS air cooler, Viewsonic VX2458-MHD 1920x1080@120-144 Hz (G-sync compatible), Windows 11. Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020, MSFS2024 and even FS9! Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .

VKB Gladiator NXT Premium Left + GNX THQ as primary controllers. Xbox Series X|S wireless controller as standby/mobile.

How did you get it working? For me it keeps saying "Inactive: Incompatible with the game's display mode.", even though VSYNC is off and P3D is fullscreen... :/ What P3D version did you try this with?

P3D is not a true fullscreen program, it is actually borderless window which may not work with Smooth Frame.

Alan

I'd believe that. However, Nvidia Inspector's half refresh rate V-sync (or 1/3 or 1/4) works for me, despite being just a borderless window. I don't remember what did I set in Display options, but I can share tonight as soon as I get back to my rig.

I used P3D v5.4. I used the AMD driver overlay to see the enhanced frame rates which was roughly doiuble the Shift+Z frame counter. It was enabled in whatever P3D full screen was by pressing Alt+Enter.

Because I prefer to fly windowed I didn't test it out too much. I didn't immediately notice any graphical glitches.

I've also used this a bit with MSFS and also haven't found any significant glitches.

Hi Luis. Can I bring this thread up again?

I am also getting a notification that Fluid Motion is not working due to the grafic API. Would you mind sharing your settings?

I never had an AMD GPU. I was considering one, until Lossless Scaling appeared (with its 2X and 3X frame generation modes). So no, I don't have any Fluid Motion settings to share, sorry.

There's an AFMF2 now

https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/release-notes/RN-RAD-WIN-AFMF2-TECH-Preview.html

I realized the original implementation was really tanking the frames for MSFS because it was eating VRAM that I didn't have. Their implementations do seem to be more for if you can already get 60 fps to start. I've gone to the LSFG instead and it's been working well.
