Faster than the SR-71 ?

Featured Replies

OK leaving aside the cringe business speak in that piece, if I'm reading it correctly its intended to be remote piloted or autonomous.

In which case it can't ever beat the record held by the SR71 which being manned is a different class of aircraft for record purposes.

Even the objectives statement for the MK3 is completely wrong, the SR71 doesnt hold the absolute speed record even for aircraft, the X-15 did over Mach 6

I can tell you that the fastest speed of the SR-71 referenced in that article is nowhere near the actual still not published maximum speed attained by that aircraft!

They intend the tech to eventually power a passenger version, in addition to the autonomous non passenger version.

Halcyon will be the passenger version.

This is a hybrid tech, part ram jet part turbo jet. X15 was just a rocket engine.

NEW YORK TO LONDON IN 90 MINUTES

Halcyon is a passenger aircraft capable of accelerating 125+ trans-oceanic routes at hypersonic speeds – five times faster than any commercial aircraft today.

More than 500,000 business class passengers travel from New York to London each year. Flying at Mach 5 would save them six hours on a one-way trip. That’s three million hours saved per year – on just one route, in just one year.

Historically, accelerating transportation networks has resulted in massive social and economic growth. Hypersonic travel has the potential to add more than $4 trillion of global GDP growth per year by radically accelerating the speed of commerce and cultural exchange.

Yes I understand all that, none of it addresses the inaccuracies in that piece I mentioned. SR71 Holds the crewed air breathing powerplant air speed record, all the different propulsion categories have distinct records the Blackbird doesnt hold the absolute speed record as stated in the piece
