February 9, 20242 yr Lately I've been re-visiting and re-watching some of the Classic (1970s...🙂...) films...and if with bits of aviation in them, the better...The last two I watched recently are the (original) "Airport" and "Where Eagles Dare". In the latter, I like the interplay between the two main actors: the (already) established and accomplished Richard Burton and the (then) upcoming star Clint Eastwood...And, of course, there are bits of aviation involved too...e.g., the Ju-52 flying the Team in in the dramatic opening crescendo, and also helping them make their escape out in the ending sequence... (Note: Unfortunately, the RW plane was destroyed in 2018, in an accident.) But the (nerve-racking) cable-car scenes in the film including the daring (roof-top) cable-car fight are the ones I always recall most (though similar scenes are relatively common in the Bond films of modern times...). Those scenes (some of which were creatively recreated in a studio) were shot in the Austrian Alps near the Feuerkogel Mountain at the southern tip of Lake Traun, about 30 miles east of Salzburg. My objective in this post is to fly these 30 miles after lifting off from Salzburg (LOWS) and getting to the (panoramic) Feuerkogel Mountain (LAT/LONG = 47.81814/13.74524, noted and used for tracking the GPS magenta line to it, see MFD Map), and ending overhead of Lake Traun, so, you'll see all these places, below, in my images...and, of course, also the picturesque (Alpine) scenery throughout my trip (kudos to the excellent MSFS image rendering of this region...)... Just a few other relevant facts of my flight-route...There are three beautiful lakes (all 3 seen in the images below) we'll overfly in this 30-mile trip: The 1st one is Lake Fuschl (Fuschlsee), the 2nd one is Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee), and the 3rd and final one (seen in my last but one shot) is Lake Traun (Traunsee) near Feuerkogel Mountain. Lake Traun is named after River Traun that flows through this Lake (you can spot the river in several of my images including in the last but one image merging with Lake Traun). So, here we go...Hope you enjoy this collection of images from the remarkably beautiful Austrian Alps...and the equally beautiful and exciting destination that the Feuerkogel Mountain is...of the Where Eagles Dare fame. For my post, to negotiate these narrow passages with ease and low speed but ability to climb, I've used here a XCub. Just FYI, for the non-natives (as I am one), there is actually a roadway that pretty much follows my flight-route from Salzburg to the Feuerkogel Mountain. Thanks for viewing...!

February 10, 20242 yr Author Folks: Thanks for the comments on this interesting topic...🙂...! (MSFS has done a good job too...) ...Of course, it would be so nice to take in RW...that roadway from Salzburg to this mountain... 13 hours ago, Alaska738 said: Great set of shots! 😉 Thanks. Appreciated the note, Will...! 9 hours ago, jeansy said: The actual Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) is model Good to hear from you, Matt, and, yes, you're correct... Thanks to the on-line materials, during this post, I got to catch up on many of the facts (RW and Hollywood/MGM version...🙂...) ...Nonetheless, in 1968, the way the many locales used for filming were seamlessly put together...must have seemed remarkable ...when viewed for the first time. Though I recalled the Cable-Car scenes at those impressive heights (the cable-car rises to more than 5,000 ft altitude) and I was always curious of its location, majority of the Castle filming was done elsewhere...including the use of scale models...Anyway a classic film... Cheers ...!
February 11, 20242 yr funny enough i watched the movie only a few weeks ago on a late night binge, i first went looking for the real life location after watching the tv series "N@z! megastructures" which told the story of the whole valley and the allies attempts to level it. Living on the other side of the world I wasnt aware that the nest still stands today and operates as tea house with one of the best views. I can understand why it was a highly prized location besides the natural defences I first checked it out in p3d, msfs has more detail as one would expect one image has the troop quarters and administrative centre and the second has the former retreat which is now a tea house Edited February 11, 20242 yr by jeansy Matt NT - AUSTRALIA

I only msfs these to explore history sites that I wont get to, i like flying around exploring islands from the pacific campaign that ive visited in the past or read about and the european AO as well its interesting to see natural the terrain that people exploited to their advantage Matt NT - AUSTRALIA

As you know, being myself one who has flown numerous of repaints of yours on numerous aircraft types...🙂...I know the full aircraft spectrum in the SIM well...having had pretty much all I could get my hands on... 🙂... the best of freeware and payware...classic and modern etc., but MSFS scenery was something that was always badly lacking in our SIMs. For some of us, it really gets as real as it would ever get...I know the aircraft will appear in due course. As someone said here, "I wish I had this in my Grade 8 Geography and History Class....🙂 ..."... Glad you are (historically) exploring MSFS too...Cheers...!
