I managed an hour of VR this morning to compare.

CPU Max Temps Package 75.6, CCD 70.8, Cores 65.4

CPU utilisation max of 67.4%

GPU Max Temps GPU 66, Memory 70, Hot Spot 77.8

GPU utilisation max of 100%

I'm pushing 4x4k per eye with high settings so GPU is being pushed hard. All air cooled via Noctua.

Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX 5090, 64GB, Win 11. MSFS2020. Moza, MFG, Fulcrum & Virpil controllers. Quest 3 for VR.

Thank for reporting your results, I appreciate it.

I'm not anywhere near 4x4k per eye, so I suppose that's why my GPU usage is lower than yours.

The temps on the CPU are what really get me; while my second test was better than my original report, it's still nowhere near as good as yours. I guess I'll start with re-seating the cooler and if that doesn't work, I'm not too sure what the next step would be. Maybe nothing...I know the 7800x3d is hotter running for a lot of folks, and amd says 89 is the max, so maybe I'm worried about nothing. I guess performance is really the big issue potentially.

Yup, as long as you are not experiencing throttling or shut downs, your temps will be fine as these CPUs can run hot. I'm assuming you haven't been running any cpu tweaking at all?

Nope, I haven't messed with it. I've never changed bios other than preset fan settings; I'm not experiences w/ it, so it concerns me to try. I've seen some folks say to enable PBO w/ undervolting, but I have no clue if that's actually useful in my case.

I'm running the CPU at stock - I did some testing with undervolting but wasn't getting a big improvement so switched back to auto. I'm running a Noctua NH-U14S cooler though which may have some bearing on the results.

After making more adjustments, I'm feeling good about VR w/ the Quest3 and I feel like I'm past the point of tweaking things; just enjoying my flights!

One general question I have is about micro-stuttering. I know VR's fidelity is never going to completely match a 2D screen, but even w/ a steady 45 fps locked I find that if I watch the scenery or clouds move by out the window it's never completely smooth; there's a very tiny amount of stuttering that's just barely noticeable. Is this just the expected VR experience or am I missing out on optimization?

I would wait for SU15 to drop before going after the micro stutters. Some people swear by various methods to eliminate micro stutters but I've never truly got rid of them. Not something I ever notice though when I'm simple flying and not looking for them though. People look at various tools to lock frame rate at exactly half the headset rate such as Nvidia Control Panel, Riva Tuner, Oculus tools, OpenXR Toolkit etc. I saw no improvement using such methods and saw a big increase in latency.

Thanks for the insight. I've been doing exactly that, 90hz/fps in Virtual Desktop w/ 45FPS locked in OpenXR Toolkit. Sounds to me like that tiny bit of stuttering is just the way it is, so I'll continue to ignore it and enjoy myself. I'm really, really happy with the experience as a whole. Can't believe how good it feels to take off from the cockpit of an airliner in a 3D world.

Yup, once you get to a point where you are happy, switch off all the monitoring tools and just enjoy the flying.
