Intel i9 crashes

I run very, very quiet fans as I am also a professional voice-over artist

I'm also audio 'involved' and yes pc needs to be 'silent' at idle. Obviously when simming it doesn't matter but if your pc is making ANY audible fan noise just running an audio app on record there is something seriously wrong with the cooling! That chip can also be undervolted but safest to leave as default and just get decent water cooling. It's pretty well plug and play these days and affordable.

I'm afraid I'm dead in the water.  My new system is crashing a lot of programs and FS won't run at all.

I flashed the latest BIOS update to my ASUS board in order to force the settings to Intel defaults, but the new Intel Baseline Profile doesn't appear to function - it's there but doesn't change anything.  I then attempted to use the Enforce All Limits approach but it doesn't appear to exist!

I've put in a request to ASUS on all of this - I'm guessing their Default settings over-drove (and probably wrecked) my i9 processor and that's why my system is going squirrely.  This is especially ironic as one tech commentator said that these insane default settings by board manufactures could shorten the life of processors by 99%.  He stated that this could generate system errors and OS corruption in about 2-3 months.  Well, my new system ran beautifully for about 3 months and then, blooey... looks like this guy is a prophet.

I've requested my PC build shop (really good guys I've worked with for decades) to:

  • Replace the MB
  • Replace the i9
  • Reset with proper Intel defaults

Thanks!  I've probably viewed about a dozen of these, each giving me some info that was helpful.  All of them, however (including this one) are a ways behind the current BIOS generation so it's not an exact match on procedures.

I will say that this video did provide some extra info that allowed me to actually apply the Intel Baseline Profile for the first time.  However, it didn't make any difference in performance and the failures continue.  I've ordered a new i9, as this one appears to be fried.

OK - my new CPU is in place (exchanged by Intel under warranty) and I'm finally flying again (after an unplanned 2-week hiatus).  Thank you, all of you for sharing your setups and resources!

I can tell you that so far there have been no crashes with any program/app.  I completed my first flight about an hour ago with no issues whatsoever.

I am continuing to run the 'Intel Baseline Profile' in the BIOS (v.1656), as it's the only way that I can over-ride the "optimized defaults".  I'm going to hold off on running XMP for now - if the system is still stable a month from now I'll transition to Win11.  If that runs well for a couple of months I'll reset with XMP.

Good luck - I hope it goes better for you than me!

My first 14900ks degraded and then failed over the course of a few weeks. Replaced under warranty. Replacement worked fine for a few weeks but has now, also, degraded and failed. I guess I will have to revert to my trusty 12900ks until I get a third copy or indefinitely if, as I would now prefer, I get a refund.

Fed up with having to go through the whole RMA business all over again. I don't enjoy opening up the PC, either. It's a complete PITA.

There is enough online reporting of these incidents to suggest that the problem is widespread with these chips.

I'm still hanging in there - the CPU is performing very well with no issues so far

I still believe that the main issue is with the MB manufacturers and their BIOS setups - they're still in a performance "arms race" mode and the new high-end chips shouldn't be pushed liked the older chips.  The voltages take them past their design limits and appear to burn them out in time.

Intel is at least partly to blame, as it appears they haven't been open with the chip's parameters - they're only shooting themselves in the foot by not providing detailed BIOS guidelines to MB manufactures.  It would also help a lot if they were to then hold the MB manufacturers feet to the fire by removing their licensing if they don't provide proper BIOS options.  I would love to see what would happen if suddenly ASUS couldn't sell boards for i9 CPUs...

That should have been the default setting to begin with, for all manufacturers. Especially since Intel is already pushing these CPU's close to their maximum performance already in order to stay competitive. There is no guarantee that overclocking them further is possible without sacrificing stability.
In fact, since Intel had some manufacturing issues some of those 13th and 14th gen chips are unstable even at their original Intel specs.
